K, well, the problem is, that usually it stalls and locks up the computer when it gets 'x' percent done...sometimes 'x' is 75 other times 11 other times 59...etc. Ive tried enable/disabling the DMA for the drive. Ive also tried different methods and speeds for burning. So far ive made 3 successful CD's and gone through about 17 discs, (about a 1 to 5 ratio). I e-mailed tech support but it was just an automated "reinstall the drive." Any ideas? thanks

What software... a lot of times it isn't the drive. Have you tried nero or the latest Easy CD Creator.

    8GB HD
48x CD-ROM drive (the old one, which the CD thats being burnt is put into)

Are you copying to the hard-drive first? You will have a tough time going from your CDROM to your Burner... especially if they are located on the same IDE cable.

yeah, their on the same IDE cable, and set it to copy them to the HD first. Actually. it will copy 1 to the HD, burn it, copy the next one to teh HD, burn it...etc. Ive tried copying them all at once, and I get the same error. So yeah, their being put on the HD first.

Did you try hitting it with a bat?

I don't know what else to tell you. Mine was finickey too, until I got a software upgrade.

Look for driver patches on the company website...

make sure they are not on the same ide channel if its cd - cdrw copy.

Setup cache so it transfers the cd to the hard drive first - its more reliabale

always set it to run a simulation first

you may have bought a bad batch or very crap cd's

when i had problems with mine - i tweaked the read ahead, blockwrite settings and the cache settings

if none of that works reinstall completely
failing that take bat to the drive and then to the person that sold it to you

if you've done all that and upgraded software/installed patches, i would consider looking into more RAM... ya never know.. I'm not sure how much memory it takes to write to cds, or copy a cd... but i do know you'd have to have a decent buffer size to be writing at 20x... ???

maybe i'm waay off.. just a suggestion though.

The problem is probably Nero. The retail version is crappy, and
you most likely have a lite version that came bundled with yours.
That's also probably why you got such a crappy tech response--
because companies do not support the lite, bundled versions of their software--only the full retail versions.
Some good cd burning programs are CDR-Win, Fireburner,
    NTI CD Maker Pro.

I can't tell you how many time Nero crashed my system, but it
    doesn't crash it anymore.

A 8Gb HD may have trouble maintaining 3Mb/sec (needed for 20x) with your MB / RAM. Is it 7200rpm or >?

    Test your HD speeds.

You said you have looked at the DMA for the CD, have you enabled it on the HD?

ok, i just checked, and the DMA is not enabled for the HD (ive tried it with on and off for the burner) I think my HD is 4200RPM or so (im pretty sure its not 7200) also, I tried the method of getting the audio from a CD, putting it all onto the HD< thne burning it to a disc, but it would come up with a blue screen of death after putting a bit on, and then crash the program
