It will work if you bypass you power switch inside your pc.
I've been planning to do something similar like this. I would like to be able to control my PC with an infrared (or radio) remote control. I would use a microcontroller and connect it to the serial port (that part I can do) so I can start aplications. And connect the remote control to the micro controller (not sure about this one). Don't ask me why, I do not know. but it looks interesting.
But then again, there are so many things I would like to do that it will take a few years to co^mplete them all

LoL! Although, I think there is an option to do that in Windows isn't there?
What will people say if they hear that I'm a Jesus freak?
What will people do if they find that it's true?
I don't really care if they label me a Jesus freak, there is no disguising the truth!

If you have your task-scheduler set to do something and your PC is plugged in and the power outlet is on, it will wake itself to perform maintenance.
easy to do on a *nix OS
