Thread: Speaker suggestions for MP3 player

My current speakers have a very weak bass (like 200 Hz minimum response frequency or something rather high like that (200 Hz is as close of an estimate I can get)), and are too strong with frequencies around 1000 Hz (about 5 dB louder than 4KHz or 500 Hz). I would like to get better speakers for my MP3 player (Creative MuVo2 4.0 GB model). What would you suggest that meets these needs, in order of importance (importance on a scale from 0 to 10 where 10 is critically important):

1. It runs using electricity from the power grid (plug it in rather than using batteries (even rechargables)) - they'll be used about 18 hours a day every day and batteries would just be a pain then. Importance: 10
2. It must use the earphone jack and not be of the dockable types (since my MP3 player is not of those types - dockable as in you dock or connect it to them and it plays from this). Importance: 10
3. At most 120 Hz minimum frequency response (80 preferred) on the low and and anything is acceptable for the high end (10,000 minimum, far lower than most any speakers I've seen, even dirt cheap ones). Importance: 8
4. A 2-speaker setup is highly preferred unless there's a 1-speaker system (unlikely) since all my music is mono rather than stereo. Importance: 5
5. Costs no more than $100. This case is highly unlikely since speakers are rarely beyond $50. Importance: 4
6. Portability and weight do not matter - they almost never move since I have my MP3 player running while I sleep, it's primary use. Importance: 1

What would you suggest?

I bought a while ago speakers from Altec Lansing and never regretted it. I have the VS4121 model, mostly for gaming and electronic music.

I found these, but I can't tell if it would connect to my MP3 player's earphone jack or not. If it doesn't connect to that, then I won't be able to hear anything and the speakers would be useless. Basically, using some ASCII art to give a better representation:

C is where I hook it up to get charged. U is where the USB cable plugs into at. E is where the earphone jack is where the speakers plug into. The "MP3 PLR" represents my MP3 player and "SPK" is the speaker. The diagram is not to scale but gives the general representation. From what I see, it relates to Ipods. I don't have an Ipod, but the rather-old Creative MuVo2 player (4.0 GB model).

Always read the manufacturer's page: it's more informative. Even if your MP3 player has some weird jack on it, (as you said it was old) then you can always buy an adapter to the more standard 1/8" plug.

I was looking at the technical specifications of the speakers whether on pricegrabber as I linked to in my previous message, or on the manufacturer's website. I didn't look at the "quick connect card" thing though.

The MP3 player uses a standard earphone jack that you see in almost any audio player device. My computer's speakers have an earphone jack. The jack that my current speakers for my MP3 player has is 1/8 inch in diameter and 9/16 inches long.

As I said it shoud be fine.

Yeah, looking at the design more closely, it seems like it'd work. If not, it's either returning them or getting an adapter of some kind.

As a side note, what is the "tone" control for? My computer's speakers have it (the BX1020 model) and it seems to have little effect (then again, over my noisy CPU/case fans, it's tricky to tell).
