These reasons are all invalid for someone who has to drive very far to work in a city with very little public transportation (ie the majority of the US)

This won't work. Just deal with the prices, like Salem said, other countries have it worse. God, I hate being an American sometimes. We are not the only country in the world! The only way this "Don't pump gas" thing would work, is if the government monitors the day, such as a "No-Gas" day like they had during WW2.

    > We are not the only country in the world!

So that means that our right to complain about things goes away?

As for the people coming in here saying "I pay $50/gallon", good for you. I'd love to have the services that are paid for by the taxes that drive up your gas prices.

You will always have the right to complain, what makes you think I meant that? I'm just saying it can be excessive. You should find comfort in knowing that you don't have it as bad as other people do, however, I don't see that happening. A famous quote, "Life's a .........., and then you die"

Like I said, the extra taxes that people in other countries pay on their gas pays for services we don't get here (healthcare, for one).

If you rolled what I pay for gas together with what I pay for medical+dental insurance, it'd be right about $6-7 a gallon as well.

Bzzzzzzt. Wrong answer. National insurance (supposedly) pays for the services we (supposedly) get. In addition, I (or rather the company I work for) pay for private medical insurance and dental insurance.

How is National Insurance paid for?

    edit:
    > dental insurance.

Haha, Brits don't have dental insurance

I should have qualified those statements; I meant "when you can." Clearly someone who lives a long way from work (though, in a more harsh stance than I'd probably take, those are choices made knowing how much driving it will entail) has a hard time cutting driving time in that manner. I was trying to illustrate that, if we're going to be so conscious of gas prices, we should also be conscious of how we're using - and wasting - that gas. A few minor reductions in our gas consumption can help to offset the rising price of fuel.
There is a difference between tedious and difficult.

Direct salary deduction - somewhere around 11% IIRC, on top of tax at around 26% (or 40% if you earn a decent salary). Tell me again about American gas prices?

The accuracy of the numbers used I'll leave open, but I think the relative comparison of tax to overall prices is something like this.

Hey, I'm completely willing to admit I was wrong. My point is still correct though - your excess taxes go to other services. I don't specifically know what the gas taxes would go to - maybe injecting flavor into your food?

PS 38%+ isn't that much more than us, especially if, as you said, you earn a lot

Yeah, sorry. That was a completely gratuitous comment on my part, and was intended as a throwaway line. I only meant to point out that our additional fuel taxes aren't intended to pay for health services.
