    > I'm not saying you're wrong, but I'd like to see a lawyer's opinion on it. There's also the issue that it's very likely different between countries.

That's a good point. Other countries may indeed look at it differently.

In my country, like all other sane countries, laws are meant to be interpretted because motivation is not absolute. If you want to live under a totalitarian ruler, go right ahead...

Mario F.: It doesn't specifically exonerate anyone from responsibility, but a little bit of common sense should play into the mix a bit, don't you think? And where are the parents during this whole thing? Are they not explaining things to their children? We seem to live in a day and age where parents are using television as a babysitter and have removed themselves from the basic responsibilities of parenthood. Such ignorant people simply shouldn't be allowed to have children in the first place. Hey, that's not a half bad idea...it would abruptly stem the population explosion and cut down on welfare programs, allowing governments to do other things with the money (in the case of here, it would simply mean more money for the politicians' wallets, but hey, no system is perfect).

Yes. But let us remove one myth... forget about wrestling for a second, this is just generally speaking... The myth that needs to be clearly removed (at least from where I stand) is:

    The media doesn't influence behaviors.

That simply isn't true. The media influences behavior. Can we agree on this? If not, I can do some research on the matter and present here evidence it does... However I'm sure common sense will lead most to agree that won't be necessary.

    > And where are the parents during this whole thing? Are they not explaining things to their children?

At this point we'd better start a new thread and discuss how our societies have effectively impaired responsible parents from doing what they are expected from. We might discuss their working hours, the demands of today jobs, extra-hours. We might discuss public schools and the loss on the last 20 years of their responsibility on citizenship education and social tutoring.

We may even discuss some countries relatively recent laws based solely on ethical issues that have effectively restrained parents from correctly raising their kids. We may discuss pseudo-psychologists with novel approaches to education in which slapping your kid in the buttocks is a thing worth jail sentence, and that your 15 year old daughter closes herself in her bedroom you shouldn't intrude on her privacy...

And we may even discuss what my wife heard just last week from one of my daughter teacher when she told her Vanessa was already helping a little around the house. For the record it was "A child under 18 shouldn't help around the house."

    > Such ignorant people simply shouldn't be allowed to have children in the first place.

Some people shouldn't, I agree entirely. But some people can't do any better. It is easy to stand on other side of the fence and think we raise our kids better than anyone else. However, some people are battlers. They work to survive. They count pennies at the end of the month and see their lives becoming more complicated every time. And they work more to try and solve the problem.

Some people simply don't have the life they had hoped for.

I'm usually much more critical of people that live comfortably and spoil their kids with a car at the age of 16, a playstation at the age of 10, a TV set on their bedrooms at the age of 8, an internet-ready computer on their bedroom at the age of 12... and a lock and a key on their bedrooms.

I must agree on that. IMHO interpretation can be biased. Interpretation can be manipulated to ones need.

I like this post. It lets me know the the new idiocy is not only in my back yard.

Common sense? We're old. Enjoy it -- 'cuz I think it dies with us (well, few and far between exceptions).
    7. It is easier to write an incorrect program than understand a correct one.
    40. There are two ways to write error-free programs; only the third one works.*

Are you serious? That's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard!

Well, to briefly mention personal experience...I've been a survivor all my life, I've fought tooth and nail to get to where I am today, and for the most part, I did it alone. So I certainly understand the concept of battling through life. Sometimes it's hard to make the right decisions, especially nowadays when you have fifty different sources of information all feeding you one story or another, none of which are true and all of which conflict. It can drive you mad. But I'll say this for sure...if you don't have the life you hoped for, the only one who can change that is yourself. I know this because I did it myself. It sure as hell wasn't easy and I'm still not quite sure how I pulled it off but if you want something bad enough, you'll find the way to get it...

But I digress. Still, I believe there's a line that needs to be defined between media responsibility and personal responsibility. You can't pin it all on one side or the other. Sure, the media can influence you, but are you susceptible to influence on that kind of level? Parents are supposed to be the #1 source of influence for their children...are they doing their jobs? There's way too many variables to consider. My wife's mother is a high school history teacher here in Puerto Rico so needless to say, we learn about all the wonderful crap that goes on in public school. There's another great source of variables that affect the outcome. Too many pieces of data to count to ever boil any particular problem down to a single source...but that doesn't stop humans from trying anyways.

Well, duh. The point is that it's near impossible to write laws where there is no room for interpretation.

Yup. And the rest of this 'debate' is boring. Seems I have not missed much. Over and over the same stuff, and I'll bet not one of you doods would tell GIANT HAYSTACKS wrestling not a sport. Old school you see.
    Such is life.
