    Microsoft and OpenGL?

I heard that Microsoft is getting rid of DirectX in the future and will switch to OpenGL? Is that true? Anybody know of any articles about that?

OpenGL fanboy-fueled rumor by the sound of it.

Fanboys never make things up to make their side look better, thus this must be true!

Microsoft give up DirectX? I'm not sure if you have been into 'tech' for very long but Microsoft doesn't give up anything it owns.

DX10 is just around the corner and Vista's GUI is built around DX10. I hardly doubt they would ever scrap DX in favor of OpenGL. The statement is absurd. How can you scrap a complete game toolchest to include sound, multimedia, networking, input, 3D rendering, etc, etc. for a framework that does just graphics?

Not gonna happen. Google = 0 hits.

Besides this is the game programming forum for game programming specific questions, not general topics like this one.

I vote it be moved to GD.

Sounds like whoever spreads this got it the wrong way round: MS is rumoured to not distribute any kind of OpenGL implementation anymore, leaving this completely to the graphics card vendors.

Or if they do OpenGL, then it will be implemented on top of DX.

DirectX 10 is right around the corner and yet they are already preparing to go beyond that with 10.1.
