Aren't you oversimplifying just a bit? Obviously the OS we use at home is a personal choice, but I doubt you have the same choice professionally or anywhere else. Just because we might all agree doesn't mean that it's pointless to discuss. Microsoft will affect the lives of 9 out of 10 people, and 72% of all statistics are pulled out of my ass.

    Microsoft is not bad.
They just don't have any rivals and that's why their products cost much.
    And people don't like that.
That's the only cause of this criticism against MS.

    > Microsoft is not bad.
I didn't say anything of the sort.

    > They just don't have any rivals and that's why their products cost much.
They do have rivals; one of them was just mentioned. And that might not be the only reason.

    > That's the only cause of this criticism against MS.
I would avoid such a restrictive statement anyway, but I think that saiavoshkc is just oversimplifying things, like I said before.

The problem is that it is hard to do anything now a days gaming wise without either A: Windows or B: Linux with more hardware than is required for windows.

I can run WoW on my laptop, 768megs or ram shared with video, 1.4ghz processor. But WoW runs like crap on my desktop, 1gig of ram, 96meg video card, 2.8ghz processor, if I run it in Wine.

Sure I could go without my games and just try and find linux alternatives for the games. But until major game developers release linux versions, it will be hard to convience people to switch over.

Also you have that people have grown up with DOS/Windows and they are most comfortable there. My parents could probably figure out how to use linux given enough time, but it would be a poor cost/benifit ratio for how they use computers.

I will probably be doing the same thing I did with XP with Vista. I wont buy the piece of crap until my old OS isn't very well supported anymore, or I get a OEM computer for some god forsaken reason.

Make sure people know who you're addressing. I read the forum top-to-bottom and assumed that you were responding to me.

But we are discussing it from a home user view point aren't we? And we discuss it because many of us may have it soon.

Just because we might all agree doesn't mean that it's pointless to discuss.
I didn't mean it is a waste of time. I wanted to see the reasons for not using Linux.

That's the only cause of this criticism against MS.
Be sure it is not the main reason.

An OS is, almost by definition, a productivity oriented program. It's also the "face" of our computer. What we see and what we interact with. For the most part, there is a natural resistance to changing this. Trying a new operating system requires learning and a training period that conflicts directly with the objective behind using it (productivity). It also means a change of "face" and of habits that are sometimes very deeply ingrained.

So it's perfectly natural that some users simply don't feel like changing OSes or even trying a new one. Depending on how someone uses their OS it is even quiet a fact that, despite all arguments comming from the zealots of both sides, both Windows and Linux do their job well. Very well in fact. So... no need to change.

    It doesn't??

My point is this; the "Just because it's cheap and it's there in huge amounts so let's not bother about how we use it" mentality breeds decadence, ignorance and stifles innovation/progress.
I'd like to rant about the negativity of this but I fear my words'll be wasted if you already think like this. This is the kind of thoughtlessness that makes ppl like microsoft get away with the stuff they do. Also lets not forget that to notice any major difference between this and XP you'd have to either upgrade your system, or buy a new system; what'll be your thought on that?: "So systems are cheap nowadays than they were 10 years ago. I'm not complaining" Do you really think all this cheese comes for free?? do you really think there are no knock on effects that result from all this?
Well I'll stop right there because I'd like to scream at ppl who are anticipating Vista with eagerness. I wasn't really anti-microsoft or for one specific OS until now; but now I think MS has overstepped their boundaries with this pos. I've begun my exodus to the other platforms. It's a shame. I thought with win 2k that they were getting better.

But those come with about 500 or more applications ...

    ... and they're stupid, too.

I've always hated all applications that come with the OS. I want to choose my own applications.

Most Linux distros I've used let you choose what apps to install... of course, this can be a long and tedious process when you're searching through 500 of them.
