Why do you program?
1(fun/fun = 1)
None of the above
Quite Possibly some of the above
All of the above
I program for my own amusement (and sometimes frustration!). Being 17 I can't do programming for work or in college as such. The most that's done in IT at my level is Pseudo code which isn't exactly what I had in mind. So I bought books and CDs and program in my spare time.
I'm planning to do an MEng degree in software engineering in uni though next year. Can you bring this thread back then?
Mostly for work and for work to come... some of it for fun/entertainment. Some to make tasks easier for myself on the computer for business... like parsing 2000-email (grouped) text files and looking for specific entries. Pain to do it by point and click... much easier to enter file name and have it spit out what I want in one second.
Automation... the key to laziness.
Because I have no life that doesn't involve the use of a modem.
I quite frequently have to do some C programming as part of assignments in physics, and occasionally in other classes at college.
I had a job doing programming last summer, and now over winter vacation I'm finishing up a few loose ends in last summer's work.
And, when I have free time, I work on various projects for fun.
So, all of the above.
I program for fun, as well as for computer olympiads as osk does
Null Shinji The Sorcerer is here
"If youre gonna do it, dont waste time. Otherwise, leave", Gendo
"Release the final safety lock, Evangelion Unit One, Lift Off!!", Misato
"Syncrograph has reversed, pulses are flowing back!!!", Maya
streamload id= nullshinji icq= 12944337; E-M@IL= email@example.com; aim= mayeba
I always do it for fun, even when I'm working. I wouldn't even want to do it, if it wasn't fun - too exhausting sometimes just to do it. An excellent payment would, of course, also serve as a motive but within five years I have yet to come across that phenomenon
developer & programmer

Fun / School for me! Finished Prog 20!! ==> Casino in the making.
Work and sometimes I 'm working on some home projects. I started programming because of fun.
I progam most for fun than for anything else, the fun given by the olympiads, but also as 'work', my own work, the project that'll change our world (HEHEHE).
no, life is nice, just a girl fooling around, alcohol fixes everything.
OH, I now have a High School Diploma and need of ron (drink)
I love programming...not a lot more to be said......I am planning to be a professional programmer eventually.
There are some real morons in this world please do not become one of them, do not become a victim of moronitis. PROGRAMMING IS THE FUTURE...THE FUTURE IS NOW!!!!!!!!!
"...The only real game I thank in the world is baseball..." --Babe Ruth
"Life is beautiful"-Don Corleone right before he died.
"The expert on anything was once a beginner" -Baseball poster I own.
Left cprog on 1-3-2005. Don't know when I am coming back. Thanks to those who helped me over the years.
I program mostly at work. However, I truly enjoy writing code - so anytime a nifty open source project comes along I'll spend my evenings and weekends on it.
Come to think of it, between HP-UX at work and Linux at home, I spend 5-10 hours a day in vi. I knew I had a serious programming addiction when I wrote code to convert ASCII to base64 for fun (no amount of psychiatry can help me).
School/Fun here. School so that I can (hopefully) get a nice job; fun because I like knowing how computers work, and like being able to see ideas take shape for free.
Callou collei we'll code the way
Of prime numbers and pings!
Fun/Fun...Although I also do it to learn more about computers.
What will people say if they hear that I'm a Jesus freak?
What will people do if they find that it's true?
I don't really care if they label me a Jesus freak, there is no disguising the truth!
