Self taught. Currently "learning" Pascal at university, but I hope they'll do some more C and C++ in next year.

Pascal? Is that still even useful? I haven't heard about that for a while now. I'm currently trying to teach myself ASM and some web scripting languages.

OHHH! Pascal is very much alive!!!
It is not used as much in professional developing since c and c++ but it is an excellent language to learn from and many schools still use it to teach programming. It is also powerful. I have done well with Pascal and amnow moving on to COBOL.
both classes and self-teaching: I took a class in high school but me and a few friends went far beyond the school's teachings and found ourself out-doing the programming teacher many times. You'd be surprised how much you can learn in a short time. But I can still say I'm an amatuer: only known C/C++ for about a eyar and a half

You CAN learn DirectX on the web... jsut look around on the microsoft site.
I am a paid programmer. Had less than a year classes in Pascal, COBOL and C.
Blagged my way into a R&D engineering firm, partially on my hardware knowledge, then taught myself the WIN32 API as I learned more complex stuff.
I was lucky, that they gave me a start without experience / degree and kept me on while I got up to speed. Now I get the latest hardware to play with including video grabbers, modified hi-res digital video cameras and the worlds biggest trains.
Little pieces of paper are important to a lot of employers especially if you have no comercial experience.

At Uni for C (although you really teach yourself), and self-taught trying to learn C++/Java over the past few months.

do i still have to take a college course to learn c even if i just need pointers(no pun intended) to become better? i don't know much about colleges. can i just take a proficiency test of some kind to show i know it?
I'm 15 (year 10 = 10th grade?) and self taught (about a year now). Might take a few courses when I'm older to get real qualifications.
