This is why saying something like "Oh... graphics don't mean anything in games" won't go well here. Graphics are a key part in the development in games and advancement in them is almost as crucial as advancing the game play itself.

EDIT: Oh and for a person not interested in arguing about video games, you certainly pulled "gaycube" out of left field.
gaycube is the first console i got of it's generation and has some of my favorite games on it

you see what i said before didn't really reflect my own opinion, i was parodying the people who insult the gamecube

and the arguments in here might as well boil down to "XBOX MORE LIKE TEXBOX GET IT LIKE TEXAS BECAUSE BOTH ARE BIG HAHAHA" because I don't think anyone of you could honestly say your opinions on the consoles have been swayed

do we really need to crap all over each other's consoles too enjoy videogames? just calm the hell down and enjoy gaming for what it is: fun

Too expensive for my interest in video games at this time. As I said, I wouldn't be surprised to see a significant price drop a few months after launch. I suspect I may buy it then, if ever.

It's expensive because of the blue ray drives, and I think they are still losing money with each ps3 they sell

what is so great about blue ray anyway?

If you have any idea how data is stored onto a disk, then you'll find the next paragraph interesting.

Despite the different type of lasers used, Blu-ray products can easily be made backwards compatible with CDs and DVDs through the use of a BD/DVD/CD compatible optical pickup unit. The benefit of using a blue-violet laser (405nm) is that it has a shorter wavelength than a red laser (650nm), which makes it possible to focus the laser spot with even greater precision. This allows data to be packed more tightly and stored in less space, so it's possible to fit more data on the disc even though it's the same size as a CD/DVD. This together with the change of numerical aperture to 0.85 is what enables Blu-ray Discs to hold 25GB/50GB.
I have no idea what this means for video games, but ...in general it's good.

for 400 extra bucks, the developers had better take advantage of that extra disk space

otherwise I'll be really mad or something

You know game consoles. The games suck at first because no one knows what the system is capable of when they get that development kit. Then they continually get better and better.

Just compare the first few PSX games to the later ones. The same with any system.

The price definately won't drop in the first few months. What will happen (and what always happens) is they'll keep the same price and throw in 2 games and/or an extra controller after a few months... so, it is a savings but its the same amount of cash up front.

I'm surprised I haven't seen this position yet but:

    Firstly:
To me consoles have set the industry back a bit instead of moving forward with better technology and better programming. But cash cows often do that so it doesn't surprise me.
I'd have to disagree with this, the hardware constraints are usually greater than those of the PC.

    Secondly and lastly:
I don't play games really, I own no consoles, I didn't ever plan on owning any consoles--until I heard about the ps3. I plan on using it as a partial desktop, the fact that linux comes pre-installed on the hard drive and that all the development tools and libraries are free and publicly available is just awesome. Also the cell processor is an incredible milestone as far as processors go, we somehow got sidetracked with this endless torrent of x86 extreme-CISC extension crap--then the itanium came around and finally put some of the years research and prior experience to use. I already have the cell be sdk and system simulator set up on my computer and I can't wait to be working with the real thing.

That's true, but the participants in the debate are just as likely to change their minds, especially on the Internet.
So true. My favorite saying is "You can't reason someone out of something they weren't reasoned into." (Twain) On the internet, people are notoriously more aggressive/mean than they are in person (don't be late!). Add that to the fact that, for a lot of people, it's all about "winning" the argument instead of a debate and exchange of ideas and you can pretty much forget convincing anyone of anything on the internet. Not that that will stop me. muuahahahaha..uh, I mean mooooooo.
There is a difference between tedious and difficult.

I just played Brain Age at work tonight. It's fun as hell. Just
a bunch of brain exerices, but very addictive.

You hold it open like a book. On the left hand of the screen
there are simple math questions, and you WRITE your
    answer on the right side.

Then it has that one game where it'll display the name of
a color in a different color.

Like Blue, or something. And you have to say "Green"
into the mic. Sounds simple, but against a clock it's very hard.

And you can play that yuppie fad game Soduko or whatever.

Not even possible on the PSP. Not to mention Meteos,
Mario Kart and Metroid over Wifi (I get wasted in death
match, though), Trauma Center, and a lot more games.

PSP is for 15 year olds. It's true. Sorry.

    edit- moooo
I'm more intelligent than you. I know more about politics, much
more about music, and could even kick your ass in a bar fight if
that's what it came down to. But guess what. I'm still talking about
    video games.

You suck at logic. Just because we talk about video games, doesn't
mean we don't talk about music or politics..

...even though politics is a shallow, trivial issue that nobody should
waste their time dealing with. No Vote '08.

    .
The artists are more important than the programmers when it
comes to the graphical success of a video game.
