Windows 98 problem

I have been running linux for some time, but now I chose to switch back to windows 98 for several reasons. The problem is that I just can't get my installation to work! I've tried installing it several times, trying practically all different options available, but every time when it's finished it just freezes on the startup screen (that one with the windows and the clouds) and then it's impossible to get it to work. I've tried formatting my hard drive and reinstalling windows, but nothing works.
What the *** could be the problem?!?
I'm considering killing Bill Gates, but I doubt it would solve this.

Hi there

I installed a Windoze98 some weeks ago and had a similar problem. My machine passed the start-up splashscreen but froze some minutes later.

I solved this problem by installing another driver for the video card. It looked like the standard driver (which was installed by the Windoze Setup) didn't like the 3D card very much

Maybe you can run your system with minimum driver support (press F8 wenn Windoze is booting) and switch the gfx (or maybe another driver).

no, when you press F8 durring boot you get a menu in witch you can choose different boot modes.

You need to choose safe mode.

I've tried safe mode already. All I get is a blue screen with the words "Felsäkert läge" (safe mode) in each corner. No start menu, nothing.

I just tried digging up my old windows 95 cd just to encounter a new problem. It seems this cd can't be used for booting, and as I can't find any floppy to boot from, I'll have to access it from dos (dos actually works even though win98 doesn't). Now the problem is that dos can't access my cdrom drive, it just says that it doesn't exist. I'm really not good at dos, do I have to mount it or something like in linux?
Please anyone, help.

If you can boot into safe mode, then your problem is proabably a device driver. Get updated drivers from hardware manufacturer's website, then remove/re-install from the device manager. Good luck.

If you can't boot into safe mode try swapping out hardware until you find the culprit.

I actually managed to get windows 95 to work, but as one might have guessed, that produced even more problems. Now it refuses to believe me when I try to say that my graphics car does support a better video mode than 16x640x480. All it says is that I should "insert the floppy windows 95 cd-rom", which sounds extremely locical. Not. (It refers to this at other times too. Every time I try to configure something, like internet connection).
Anyone know how to make windows understand that I installed it from a cd, and not a floppy (especially not one called "Windows 95 cdrom")? This is ........ing me off.

Just press Ctrl-Alt-Del when the Welcome program starts.
Then kill the task.
Run the program "regedit". Search for "C:\windows\welcome.exe" (I don´t know exactly if it´s the correct path, maybe welcome.exe is somewhere else) and delete the registry entry with "C:\windows\welcome.exe" (with the Del-key).

in the same dialog box it probably shows you a browse button
i dont know if win95 does that
win 98 onwards always does that when somethin is missing and lets you find it

if you get the browse thing then you are almost done all you need t do is to point it to your cdrom or some folder on it

another thing
could you brief us on your partitions
i know its probably just a devdriv problem but i would like to know what you are upto here

btw tried another win98(borrowed mayb)

Dunno....but I usually copy the *.cab files fom My windows98 disk to the hard drive...then when it requests a disk I point it to that dir.......

You want to be very careful what you delete in there....you can cause all sorts of problems messing with the registry...it doesnt automatically backup deletions or remember what you did (Unless you have the far better Norton Regisrty Editor which Symantec stupidly dropped from their program suites for Win2K and above

Yes, I know you can damage a lot. But welcome.exe always made my computer crash. All I want to say is, that you have to throw welcome.exe out of the autostart (in the registry).
