I'm interested in knowing what the specs will be for this, as it seems his games are always very ropey on release and seems to rely on the consumer catching up.

I sure hope the 3D engine technology is far better than Sims 2. Not exactly the height of 3D engines there.
I was impressed with the way he was forming the creatures. It seemed very versatile. That was how I wish The Sims 2 character creation was. I hated having to get the perfect combination of the 50 or so slide bars.Originally Posted by Bubba
Anyway, I would love to understand what he was really talking about all the logic and mechanics being "procedurally generated". He seemed to be excited about the fact that it wasn't completely OO.

I thought the engine there fit the art style of the game pretty well. It wasn't necessary for it to be photorealistic or anything.Originally Posted by Bubba

huh? do you mean Object Oriented? He was saying that the textures, verbs, and environments are procedurally generated. That has nothing to do with whether or not the code is object oriented.Originally Posted by SlyMaelstrom
This is good news, but will still probably be quite rigid. When you watch him modify the character you still have to use the relatively small preset bank of parts, and stick them onto the skeleton in places that make some sense. In alot of ways, its only upping what games like NBA live already have 2 or 3 notches. For user friendlyness, a preset thing of parts is important, but sometime a game needs to allow me to enter whatever model I please and have it procedurally figure out how to use it.
Ahh, where were the good days of Dark Forces, a heroic male fighting waypointin badies
EDIT
What it really reminds me of is this one space sim where you construct space planes. It didn't even classify itself as procedural because of how heavily it used objects, like it seems this game does as well. Only difference would be the cross-terrain abilities

That video is very impressive. I wonder what the game would be like as a herbivour? You'd probably have to rely on weaponry to take care of hostile civs and such.
I found myself laughing histerically at several points because of how awesome/funny the creatures actions were.
Well Sims 2 while being good at representing objects, is not so good at maintaining FPS with those objects. Herky and jerky, long load times between major scenes, character commands get lost amidst of jumble of other AI processes begging for the attention of your sim, etc, etc.
I have University, Night Life, and Open for Business. I see no way possible to go to college, graduate and get a great job, meet your Sims(es) needs, and also run a small home business all the while satisfying your completely annoying friends who feel it is their duty to call you every damn day and ask if you are still friends...not to mention the caterwailing spawns of satan, also known as babies, that wake your sims up at the most inopportune times.
If Spore is like that, no thanks. Although the scope of the game looks cool, it may be a bit too much. Undoubtedly when the focus is too large, the game loses it somewhere. Let's hope Spore doesn't fall into the same trap.
Graphics and ooooo la la eye candy don't do anything for me anymore since they are getting easier and easier to produce. Gameplay, replayability, AI, story, intuitive GUI...now those impress me.
Sounds pretty realistic to me.Originally Posted by Bubba
Yeah, but I know what you mean. Though, I'm sure you will, like me, buy the game to find out how good it is. Personally on this one I don't think I could settle for a website or magazine review. I'm going to have to see this one myself.

Realistic, in this case, does not always mean 'more fun'.
But, yes, you cornered me.....I'm salivating at the mouth waiting the release of this game.

That's a good point, and I totally agree with you.

I watched this video for a second time and i was thinking, if you are able to download other players civilizations and all that stuff will be saved on your HD. Well i wonder how many players civilization you can download before your HD is full.
When no one helps you out. Call google();
You don't really choose what to download as far as I can tell. The game tries to create a balanced echo system. If you have a bunch of gentle creatures it will download viloent killers, if you have earth friendly green peace vilages, it will download techno industrial ones, etc.... I assume it will only keep what it needs to balance your environment on disk.Originally Posted by InvariantLoop
I also get the feeling that you only download their creatures and those creatures evolve differently throughout the game. You aren't downloading the entire civilization or lanet immediately. It looked like in most games it'd take you a LONG tie to be able to achieve technologies that allow interstellar flight. It seems like you're not going to be downloading a whole lot of other civilizations and planets in whole until you've gotten really far in the game.
i think "procedurely generated" means different limbs of the creature etc move depending on their location of the body and the terrain etc. ie the legs dont walk in one motion, they can walk around in very strange patterns depending on their location on the body and terrain
where as other games when characters walk they just have a set animation for their legs
this game looks fun im planning to get it when it comes out. "prays computer has the horse power to run it"
