    DirectX 9?

What has everyone heard about DX 9? Theres probably an info page somewhere on MSDN but i hate that site, its impossible to find stuff. Anyone know when its slated to come out? I hear its going to wrap up some loose ends (Imagine that: Microst having loose ends) with the merging of DDraw and D3D. Sounds good to me.

Ddraw and D3D have already merged, in 8.0 i think

They have, (i've used DX 8 for some time now) but apparently they are making the merging even more seamless and friendly (and faster).

In ver8.0 it became DirectGraphics but was really just direct3d. all of the interfaces were still named direct3d and directdraw so I'm not really sure where the "graphics" was. I haven't heard much about what will be new, but I think it should be released early next year. Maybe by March? Maybe they'll actually have a new interface for the graphics portion. It seems like they are trying to tie all of the sub APIs together now.

In DX 8 microsoft combind the lower API'sof the same catagory into just a single API. The sould API's merger is very good but the graphics apparently are not right yet. In case your wondeing that is why directdraw was not upgraded.

There was a beta testing program but I think that ended.

DirectX9 is almost ready, about 10 weeks ago, I read at MSDN that DirectX 9 was almost ready and they needed to do beta testing, so they called everybody who wanted to join. I signed up to beta test, but I dodn't get accepted

Oooh. Almost ready... *rubs hand in anticipation* Cant wait to get my hands on it. I'm really hoping for some improved routines for D3D. The "half-way" blend of DDraw and D3D didnt really work for me. It makes some simple stuff suddenly a lot more complicated. What took me the longest to accept though was the new vertex system. I'm hoping it'll get a working over. I'd like a little more versatility.
