How much sleep do I actually need each night?

Well, I dont like sleep (no programmers do ) so im wondering, with school, on weekdays, how much sleep can I get by with...cause I dont want to fail all my tests and stuff cause im too tired...now im getting sleep from about 10:30 to 6:30, so thats about 8 hours, which is the average for an adult I believe...but what could I get by with so it doesnt effect my school work? Could I do it on maybe 5 hours or so? Any ideas? thanks!

All that matters is the motivation... I've had 2 days not sleeping, and not feeling bad, but when doing things that I really like... it's so with almost everyone...

Some tests, shows that a one can take more than 1 week without sleeping, and without any harm... it depends what the one does in this week... :-)

On weekdays with school I would advise getting at *least* 8 hours. But it depends on the person.

My full quota regretably is roughly 14 hours. However I, for obvious reason can NEVER get that much sleep every night. I have to spend about 10 hours every weekday on college work on average so naturally I get as much sleep as possible. I don't get to spend as much time writing code as I did but on the weekend I go without sleep or one or two hours with my head on the keyboard (!).

I can get by on 4 hours a night during the week because I can catch up on Thursdays as I have leave in the morning (and I like coffee!). I would however reccommend as I've already mentioned a minimum of 7/8 hours per night if you don't want to be dozing in your classes.

    Happy snoozing!

I get about 6 during the week. On the weekends it varies (2-10 hours) relative to the amount of certain liquids consumed the night before and any incentive to wake up in the morning (such as to determine where you are waking up).

Check this site out tho. Not really relating to how much sleep you can get but it does pertain to the effects of sleep deprevation in the brain under various circumstances.

8 hours on a school/work day, and 6 hours on any other day.

I need about 8 hours of sleep a night but my sister(non-programmer but in highschool) can go on 2 hours a night on weekdays and 4 hours on weekends. But she userally cant do both in the same week. She normaly does one or the other but I have yet to see her come home before 2 AM... and she gets up at 6 AM every weekday(this does not include whens she's on call for EMT). I have no idea how she does it but she can.

I function best on 8+, but if I can't get 8, I try to go for zero -- the absolute worst, for me, is to get 4-7, I'll wake up five times more tired than I'd be had I just stayed awake. If I can't get 8, I often skip sleep altogether, take a 2 hour nap in the afternoon, which for some reaon is vastly more refreshing than 2 hours at night.

I normally get way less than I'd like (get up at 6 every day for college...) and go to bed around midnight... so that figures into about 5-7 weekdays...

I do catch up on sleep the first day I got off on weekend (Friday), don't get out of bed till 11-12...

hm... y'know if you think about it, you spend over a third [hopefully] of your life sleeping... [and hopefully not a third at work...] so... that really stinks... that's a lot of the reason i live the way i do... just about fun and stuff... actually i don't really know, but anyways... after 12 hours of sleep you can do _anything_...

One of my friends is a non sleeper.

In ten years of living together his GF has never seen him asleep! I've known him 18 years and never seen him sleep, though I have seen him star-fish on the carpet a few times.

"I'll sleep when I'm dead!" is his motto.

I crash around 12.30-1.00 am. If I have uni on I'll get up around 6.00 or 7.00, but on the weekends I usually sleep in till 9.30-10.00, unless I've got something on.

You sleep more as a teenager so if you're between 13-17 and sleep in, it's pretty normal.

I am in my last semester of my Junior year in College
(one more year TG) and I have gone all the way through school with an average of about 20 hours a week sleep. Of course I have to work as well as study so that has a lot to do with it but luckily I have done just fine. I'm still alive.
