My wife and I gave $50 this morning... it's not much, but it's something.

If I wasn't taking classes this semester I would be driving over there and helping people rebuild houses since I'm handy like that.
Maybe they will still need people in the summer?
Hmm
By the sounds of it they definitely will.Originally Posted by B0bDole

If anyone lives in florida and wants to come along or if your business wants to help us get up there let me know.

I encourage you all to do one thing that costs no money but is extremely important: Donate blood.
Something better than blood would be those chemical substitutes. No risk of diseases that way.Originally Posted by Thantos

And how is that helpful in the context of this thread? I don't think people are going to be able to provide any blood substitute and the fact of the matter is that we need blood NOW.
Perhaps. But I seriously doubt you'd ever collection the required amount of blood. Not to mention they'd have to check the type it is and for the presence of diseases. Not to mention that blood also has to be stored a certain way. Substitutes have far fewer restrictions.Originally Posted by Thantos
Edit: Before I forget, something that I'm curious about is how the heck they are going to get the pumps in the flooded area working when they're underwater.

Sure, but we have an infrastructure in place for collecting blood and testing it. Absolutely a synthetic substitute would be better, but it doesn't seem to be available yet. (From what I can tell, studies were starting up just this month: http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2005/au...le/?city_local) And again, synthetic blood is not going to do any good during this disaster.Originally Posted by Frobozz

It's my understanding that they're constantly a little short on blood anyway, so it can't hurt. And they give you cookies, too.I'm not sure if there's really a blood shortage right now because most of the injuries don't seem to be trauma).
For those of you actually in the middle of this thing - other than money, man-power, and perhaps blood - is there anything else you guys really need?
I'm going to start giving blood as often as possible ASAP. In the UK you can't start till your 18, that's a year away for meOriginally Posted by Thantos
Mostly fueled by the fact my brother was on deaths bed but saved by blood doners; got to give thanks somehow.

I know that the organization that pretty much handles the blood supply for the sacramento region has stated they sent whole blood to the region, thus creating a shortage here.Originally Posted by webmaster
Look at the number of hospitals that were abondoned, any blood they had is useless now thus you again have a shortage.
Also sean is right, there is always a small shortage.
