My brother-in-law and I were discussing the future of Star Wars a few weeks ago (right after the discussion of the difference between St. Elmo's Fire and ball lightning and before the discussion on Visual Studio.NET 2005 Beta 2 - we're nerds). He has a theory that they're going to remake the original Star Wars movies with new special effects, etc..., and I have a theory that they're going to make a Star Wars 7 - I mean, the premise is there what with Luke having a sister and all. Penny for your thoughts? (your two cents, as it were - quite the rip off)

Remaking 4,5,6 would be plain stupid. Adding more effects, sure (has already been done at least once) but not remaking.

well, AFAIK, lucas originally planned star wars to come out in three trilogies (1-3, 4-6, 7-9), but after the first three (4-6) came out, he never really thought much of doing the others... then he did 1-3 after re-releasing 4-6 as many times as he could...

following his forumula, we'll be hit with releases of 1-3 (as a trilogy, with extras, then redone with more/updated effects) and then releases of boxed sets (1-6), then maybe if he's still alive he'll have to look into making 7-9

I'm not so sure, the reason the special edition of 4,5,6 was relweased was when those were made they didn't have the technology (nor budget) to create all his imaginations. Now in 1,2,3 and the limitless CG age I see no reason why he should add more effects. Sure trilogy packages and similar will be relaesad though...

Sounds to me like when the director of the US Patent Office requested that it be closed, as "everything that could be invented, already had been invented". That was about 90 years ago if I recall.

Star Trek: TNG is the best. It's just so more imaginative than star wars. Ok, maybe that's 'cause star wars is a movie, and star trek was a series (the star trek movies aren't as good as star wars, of course)

I have to agree with sean here... don't forget, processors become more powerful and you can get better effects all the time... although I do think that the upgrade will be with technique more than technology...

I didn't say that you CAN'T add more and better effects, I said there is no NEED.

was there a NEED for the first three? Luke still yells "carrie" when he jumps off the X-Wing into leia's arms... if they wanted to fix something, they could have tried to take care of that... (unless they did--I dont' remember) =P

Right, I saw this thing in an behind-the-scenes about StarWars creatures. You know in ep6 at the end Luke stands on one of the Ewok bridges and sees the ghostly shapes of Obi-Wan, Yoda and Anakin. But this time it wasn't the Anakin actor from ep 6 but him from ep 2,3 (Christensen or whats-his-name). Is this some official remake or was it just some random edited footage?

I'm pretty sure that was an official thing.

I like Star Wars (the original three, I have no particular fondness for the new ones), but I was really fond of the first six Star Trek movies too (The Voyage Home and The Undiscovered Country were really good).
The word rap as it applies to music is the result of a peculiar phonological rule which has stripped the word of its initial voiceless velar stop.
