Has anyone been spammed for posting their email?

    ^ ^ ^
What the title says. I've heard in a lot of places that people who post their email addresses on the net end up getting boatloads of spam. I've also noticed that, since I've posted my hotmail address in the Contacts thread, I still haven't gotten any spam except from Hotmail's MSN Plus upgrade advertisings. Has anyone here really gotten spammed since posting their un-de-@-ified email address in the contacts thread (or anywhere else)?

That happened to me a few years ago. Out of nowhere I started getting 50 spam messages a day. I searched google for my email address and there it was in plain sight . That went on for a couple of years actaully, ended up abandoning that email addy.

    Yes.

I have a email account at cjb.net. They allow anything before the '@'-sign and you'll still recieve your email.
    [email protected]

That way you can create a unique address every time you post or submit your email. It is very easy to block a particular address if you start recieving spam to it. Also, you can tell if a site or company sells your email to spam companies.

The worst thing to do is to post your email at usenet.

I got an increase when I bought my domain and put a contact email on the site in plain view. That'll teach me not to use a form.

Cool, thanks for the info everyone. Personally I've never had a problem with getting spammed, but I was messing around with some Gmail forwarding features, and I set up a sort of proxy account that I intended for use in easily-harvestable situations (primarily on forums or usenet, if I should ever for any reason feel like posting my email). Basically, all mail goes in the trash, but if the subject line contains "_notspam_" and/or the user is on my safe-list, then the email gets forwarded to my primary account too. I imagine the [email protected] would be more practical though, assuming there aren't cjb-targetting spiders. I'll definitely check it out some time.

    here's something you can try:

send an email to [email protected]

that way if you need to register, say with amazon, you can put [email protected] and when you start getting a billion spam hits addressed to that, you'll know who it was that sold your address

im not sure if it works with every email, but I know gmail allows you to add something with the + like major_small said, then you can filter it to arrive somewhere else, like your spam box.
    Hmm

I got bestiality porn spam a few times, and other spam messages. Ignored them (and deleted them) for some time, and they're gone. Same with porn spam on AIM, ignore, block and warn and they went, lousy bots.

Note: I did not sign up for any such... site.

I think that works in pretty much every mail system... I've tested it in gmail and hotmail, and first saw that in PC Magazine somewhere...

the main point with that is, say, signing up with cprog... if I put my email addy as [email protected] and I start getting incest pr0n addressed to [email protected], I'll know who sold my address...

Strange, you said you tried it on GMail? I've tried 3 times now with variations, and I haven't received one of my the emails I sent myself yet.

yeah, I tired it on gmail, but the strange thing is that gmail filters it out if you send it to yourself... no error emails, nothing, but if you send it from some other email account it works... PM me your email and we'll try sending from one Gmail account to another...
