Thoughts, opinions? I'm curious about what you guys think of them. I use them with Opera's built-in reader to get tech info and updates from some of the major sites I visit. Actually, the RSS feed pretty much eliminates the need to go to the site in some cases (slashdot).

It's not something I've gotten into, but it seems to be gaining support. Am I missing something?
I don't see the point of them. If I want the latest headlines from a site, I visit the site. Am I missing something?

Ok, but let's say you get them all in a little list in a reader... you scan the headlines and if you see something you want to read further, you click the provided link and it takes you there.
I guess the real advantage would be on a dial-up connection, but I still see an advantage because I can scan through headlines from several sites very quickly by changing a dropdown box.
I wrote an app that monitors my gmail inbox using the RSS feed*, other than that ive never used them.
I've tried to get into them, but like joshdick said, if you want the info, got the page.
For example, www.theregister.co.uk and news.bbc.co.uk have RSS feeds, which I have added to my bookmarks in Firefox. Sure, it's nice to be able to view the headlines as a list of entries in the dropdown, but they don't come with eye catching pictures that would normally draw me in to read more.
Sorry, no use for RSS in my browser.But I'm sure there'd be other uses....

The live bookmark of Firefox is not really my taste, but, I use an extension called Sage. I use it simply as a "notification" if there's new content; much more convenient than checking the sites one by one. But I eventually go the website if there's new content.

I love Thunderbird's RSS reader. Right next to my mails, a least of new articles.

Sometimes it's more convenient to have a popup notify you of an update to sites or new headlines, than it would be to surf every bookmark or site you happen to follow. Personally I have hundreds of bookmarks, so actually visiting each site to check for updates, news etc, can be rather time consuming.
It's also much easier to view at a glance archived headlines with an RSS reader. Take any popular news website, whether it's Slashdot or something more commercialized like CNN.com, if you miss a day or two of diligent surfing, those news items will be archived (slashdot for example only displays articles from the last 24hrs) and then you have to go digging to see anything you may have missed. With an RSS reader, the link will take you directly to the article.
And then there are times quite often when you're working on the computer, but you're anticipating updates to current events (war time coverage, Michael Jackson sentencing, whatever...) but you don't want to keep dropping out of work mode to go checking for the updates every so often, so it's easier to just let your favorite RSS reader do it for you.
