I need some opinions on the value of having a camera lens, particulariy on handheld devices (besides standalone cameras) like phones, pda's etc, protected with some sort of shutter type thing. How many of you have camera phones, or pda's with built in cameras, and is the lens protected with something? If not, do you find it to easily get dirty or scratched?
How big of a deal is it, not having some sort of protection for you lens concerning the devices mentioned above?

I really would want to have some kind of protection for the lens. Having the device in the pocket could easily scratch the lens.
Not that one scratch affects the image quality that much, if anything, but I'd still want to have some protection.

well, comming from somebody who would pay $8k for a standalone camera if I had the money, protecting your lens is very important. I also have a PDA with a lens that doesn't have a cover. I bought a case that had a sliding cover for it, and it still doesn't work very well. it seems like those lenses attract dust. basically it comes down to this: you should always have some part of your lens that you can easily clean or replace if it gets dirty/breaks, that you never have to take off. on standalone cameras, for example, this would be a skylight or a 1A filter. I don't know about the type you're talking about though. maybe somebody sells some kind plastic you can put over the lens to protect it.
at first it's not a problem, but over time all the dust that gets in there will really ........ with your picture quality.

cost of one good lens=$1,000+
cost of one good protective filter= $20 +
Scratch one good lens = -$1,000.+
Scratch one good protective filter= -$20+
Any camera hobbyist will tell you it's a no-brainer-protect your
lens with a filter.

hmm..
In my particular case, it's a pda issue: to get one with a biult it camera or not. I"m not in the least bit interested in whether it can take massivly quality pictures, just for the purposes of fun.
I think my best bet will just to buy a compact flash or sd camera. Anywone have one of these? Any recomindations?
Oh, and in the case that i did get one of these, what is responsible for being able to record video/audio? Does the camera have to have the ability to do that or is it all software related?
