    CProg chess tournament

OK guys, like stated in the other thread which I hijacked (sorry to the op), I'm thinking about getting a tournament together on yahoo chess.
I want this thread to serve the purpose of establishing a time date and game type as well as other logistical things.

I think that the best date and time for this would be a weekday in the evening - by weekday I mean Monday through Thursday - and by evening I would say 5pm and later central. The soonest I could actually do this would be in two weeks, so first full week of March.

I also think that yahoo chess would be the best place to host it as it is free, easy to use, and most of us already have yahoo id's.

If you are interested taking a part in this tourney please specify so in your reply. Also, add any suggestions you might have about time, place, or whatever else. The place has to be free and easily accessible with the ability of creating private rooms and a rating system.

    My thoughts...
I want to take part even know I haven't played in quite a while, and never seriously. I agree to yahoo being the place as pretty much everyone has one or more ids. Would it just be a single elimination bracket? The players would have to decide the time to play amongst themselves probably. Before the game, the players would have to decide on game length and if an agreement couldn't be made, they could fall back on a defualt length.

I'm not sure what kind-of touney I will make it....I guess it all depends on how many people want in. if there aren't many of us I'll make it something different than single elim....

I'm thinking that the default time would be 5/5 with a 10 min max.

it's ok - this will be just for fun; skill level doesn't matter here. If, indeed, this does turn into something we want to do periodically, and if there are enough people willing to do so, I might come out with some ranking system in order to chose opponents.

I'd love to play, but I'm from Australia so I'll probably be at work if we play on a weekday... how about a saturday morning?

well, I generally work or sleep - mostly work though - but if there people would like that time, nothing is stopping you to do it without me.

Does yahoo support the mail based type of play?

You know, I make a move and then its mailed to you. You login and make your move and its maile to you. etc

I don't think so...but what would be the point anyways? when playing by mail/email you could just go through the moves yourself. I once played this grand master (actually he claimed to be a grandmaster) from Russia, via email - anyways, we're about 15 moves into the game and he gives me his move, followed by this comment "whatever move you make, I will move here and here, and then again, whatever you do, I will move here-and-here" - basically the guy was full of himself. I've taken my time with response and got an incredible position out of it....but the guy was a great player, it ended in a draw - which I suggested

I'd be willing to play, I haven't played chess competitively in years though, but I'm sure up to it.

oh, and timewise, what about this weekend?

I'll play why don't you make a chart depending on how skilled the person thinks they are so we can match people up. I give myself a 5 out of 10.

thats cute, but will never work - people rating themselves is way too subjective. That's why I asked on the other thread if any of you were rated with the USCF? and if not that, maybe on yahoo?

Well I was thinking of something like this:
    -You login
-If it's not your turn you can't see the board
-If it is your turn you are allowed to look at the board for the amount of time it took the other player to make their move (w/o their move actually being shown). When that time is up (or you push a button) their move is made and the time starts counting down.

Actually that would make for a fun site project: Write an internet chess app and then have a chess tourny

I really don't know if this works out better or not, there is a great server called FICS ( free internet chess server ) which would allow for many people to play in an actual tournament style. It is a free server but does make you get a chess interface for it. check out freechess.org or more about it.
