Thread: Electric Guitar

I'm buying an electric guitar on a very limited budget(how much money can a 15 year old have?)

I don't want to pay more than 200$ for the guitar and the amp, which I know is very inexpensive.

I've narrowed it down to this guitar :

I've been playing on a crappy 20$ acoustic with strings high off the fretboard and a misaligned neck(at least I assume that's the problem. It's impossible to tune because I tune it perfectly open, but then when I push down on the strings, it goes out of tune.)...

If anybody has any other inexpensive suggestions, recommendations, or whatever, I'd appreciate them.

And also, I wondered if it was generally possible/practical/musically not crappy sounding to apply distortion to acoustic electric guitars. If so, I'd much rather buy this :

Get this guitar. It's a Fender (which are the most popular type of electric guitar). I own one myself. It comes with everything you need for $279. Case, electronic tuner, amp, strap, cable, extra strings, picks, etc.

Couldn't get the link to come up at first, but now I see that's basically the one you're buying. Sorry.

How can you buy a guitar without playing it first?



I spent months looking at Maton guitars until I found the one that suited my style of playing (action and tone). Maton are Australian hand made, mine with rosewood for a deep blues tone. I use some effects on it but it is a different sound/playing action to electric. I always get more string hiss....

I also have a 1980s Squire silver series strat I bought new. Are they still a Fender made in Japan?

How much is a good second-hand Fender (elec) or Yamaha/Ibenez (semi acst)?

Quality names like Fender, Gibson ect hold or increase in value. They are usually better fitted and manufactured.

I agree with the Fender & Gibson praise, but if the guy only has $200 to sell, then that knocks both of those out of the water.

You could go with a Fender Squire though. Up untill a while ago, many of them were made in China, but they are cheap and pretty good generally for the money you pay.

I've had an old Squire Strat for years. It's the guitar I mess around with when sat at home on my sofa: it's good enough to play with and I dont care if it gets a dent or two. I also have a Gibson Les Paul, but that lives in it's case when it's not in use, and I try to avoid dents and scratches with it. In all, I probably play with the Squire 90% of the time, and it's fine for me
