Vick's passing has improved. While I agree that he should throw more....he does need another reciever besides Crumpler and why not take advantage of the weapons you have? With him, Dunn and Ducket the Falcons are in the unheard of positions of being about to put 2 or 3 serious running threats on the field at a time. If Vick doesn't run some - especially on designed runs, you start to take that threat away - which hurts your pass game and the rest of your running game. Not to mention, a lot of the delayed runs that Vick makes are designed as runs or as options - I don't think you should wail on him for a designed play...

That being said, he still has a lot of work to do on his descission making and passing abilities before he'll be a great QB.

    > Vick's passing has improved.

    Michael Vick 11-24 136 0 1 46.5

If you discount the 3 longest passes he threw Sunday, there's a whopping 53 passing yards, which is a stellar average of 6.6 YPC. He was also sacked for almost 40 yards.Atlanta had the least passing yards, least attempts, and least receptions in the league this year. It can't all be blamed on the WRs.

edit: And if you look at the stats, his passing was actually worse this year than it was in 02, the only other full season he's played. It's not as if they've lost any big receivers since then, either.

You're right, but the numbers you're pointing at from sunday are against one of the best pass defenses in the league - while still not great, his rating against other teams was average wasn't it?

No. His passing yards are below even the great Joey Harrington, who didn't even have his first 300 yard game of his career until like week 15 of this season (whenever they lost to the Vikings on that crappyass snap). His QB rating's 6 tenths of a point higher, though! Awesome!

Speaking of the Lions, here are Vick's stats in the game against them this season. Keep in mind that Detroit's one of the worst pass defenses in the league.

    18 29 196 62.1 6.76 49 0 1 67.6

edit: That jumble of numbers doesn't make much sense as a jumble. They are, in order, completions, attempts, yards, percent, average, long, TDs, INT, and rating.

Wow RoD. In a conversation riddled with evidence and faulted filled with facts and thought, you managed to make the point so much better than any of us. Thank you.

I agree with Kermi, he certainly needs to improve his throwing and get better receivers before he can ever become a great QB. That being said though, I think he unjustly gets blamed for the fact that Atlanta hardly thows the ball. Atlanta rarely calls passing plays to anyone other than Crumpler, and that really can't be blamed completely on Vick's passing ability. The team wins because of Vick's feet and the disruption it causes to the other team, make him stay in the pocket every down and you can pretty much guarantee that the Falcons would have been at best a Wild Card and no way would they be one game from the Super Bowl. Plus, everybody in the world knows that he is only going to throw to Crumpler, yet the guy still gets tons of TD's and yards which shows that Vick is certainly capable of throwing it well to a good reciever. When none of your crap receivers are good enough to ever get separation, what can you possibly do?

A good example is the two playoff games this year. Against St Louis he had far less pass completions and far less passing yards but he ran for a lot. Atlanta won easily. Against Philly he was held in check and hardly ran for anything. Even though he got more passing they lost pretty handedly. They win when he can run and lose when he can't, so why would Atlanta call passing plays? This is why he has the lowest passing attempts, completions, etc. The team runs as much as any other team, plus a third to a half of the passing plays are designed Vick runs. Its not his ego, its just the way the Atlanta offense is designed right now. Plus they just converted to a West Coast Offense which is all about those stupid little dink passes.

If he could just keep from thowing stupid interceptions I'd think him and the Falcons would be an extremely tough team to beat. Yards and completion average just don't mean that much.

The falcons would be a VERY good team, and they have shown they have the heart....they need recievers, because if vick keeps holding the team on his legs, hes going to loose his career to injury. Look at the hits philly laid on the falcons last night, they are all soaking in hot tubs today, im sure.

I agree with PJ - as I should since he was agreeing with me, but I also think that he's not giving enough credit to the Falcon's defense this year.

The new coaching staff brought it from worst (32nd) in the league to 14th. That's a heck of an improvement and I think that's an even bigger reason that the Falcons made it this far this year compared to last than Vick is.
