    The Qu'ran

Can anyone here recommend a good translation of the Holy Qu'ran? I'd like to study the Islam religion, and obviously the Qu'ran is the way to go. I'd would like most to read it in Arabic, but unfortunately I don't have that ability yet. Thanks for any suggestions!
Do not make direct eye contact with me.

I'm sure that you could find an english translation in most book stores. I found a copy on amazon so surely there is one at borders.

As a side note, I heard on NPR today that Arabic as a course in college is very popular these days.

I, and a lot of my brothers here on campus recommend : "The Meaning of The Holy Qur'an", by 'Abdullah Yuusuf 'Alii; This version not only has a very good(for english) translation overall, but also has side-by-side English-Arabic versions, it also has somewhat of an interesting commentary(basicaly I would call it the Islamic version of a study bible).

If you want to learn Arabic without/while taking a course, I reccomend that you take a visit to your local mosque(s). Most of the people there are more than willing to help anyone interested in Arabic or Islam.

EDIT: if you are interested in studying Islam, I would reccomend that you pick up a copy of the Sunnah as well, as it also plays a significant part in the religion.

i was talking to three guys (one gal) and they said they switched to an arabic class from ancient greek. i never thought of it as being common on many places, but i guess it is. interesting choice i must say.

I certainly wouldn't be surprized if Arabic is becoming more popular. With a lot of the world's attention moving to the Middle East in recent years, there's a much greater demand for people who can translate, etc... I know BYU used to have a really good program going in Jerusalem, with quite a few different degrees from Arabic Studies, Ancient Religion, etc... They shut it down soon after September 11th though. I don't think they've reopened - which is sad because it was a good program.

The only possible reason I can see to use Ancient Greek (unless you picked up an original of the Iliad at a garage sale) is if you wanted to learn word derivations.

of course I would not read it, I would sell it to a private collector for a couple million.

Uhm.... no Jimbob. This thread is on two topics(one originally):

    1) What is a good translation of the Qur'an since Lurker is interested in studying the religion itself.
    2) Languages and their growing/declining popularity.

No where do I see , " lol, I want to find out about books with the purpose of being the guide in a religion, lolxors". This thread is strictly related to the Islamic faith and its religoius books and has nothing to do with Christianity.

You know, maybe with anyone else on this board I'd say yes, but for you, it's definitely inappropriate.
