I'm building a gun at school...

Well, a gauss gun any way.

ALso known as coaxial accelerators, gauss guns use magnetism to accelerate a ferite material. Ideal uses for such devices include launching payloads into space.

It's my physics 115 class and everybody has a class project they have to complete, I still have like 10 weaks to do it so time isn't a crush. I asked my teacher if it would be ok if I built a coaxial accelerator (gauss gun) for the project. She said that a guass gun was more of a 116 project. So she suggested that I make it a project spanning both semesters (115 and 116) as there is a project for each. She suggested that this semester I focus on making a scale model using PM's (perma magnets) and determine the accelerations and launching velocity based on the balls projectory. Then next semester for the 116 project I could focus more on the mathematics behind it and build an electromagnet gauss gun and do some theory to determine epected performance and compare it to experimental values..

So all in all she basicly said - go ahead and make a guass gun and don't even worry about explaining, or any of the real science behind it, not yet anyway.. Lol this is great.

I don't supose any of you have done such a project?

For good sport, I'll go ahead and link you guys to a site that shows how to make a home made gauss gun.

funny I read the title and your name
    Code:
    Jeremy
have you ever heard of the song Jermy by a band called Pearl Jam. If so, do you know what it means? Pretty coincidental

Does it mean my name? cause if it does that is pretty coincidental.

    No i haven't, enlighten me.

I am a huge pearl jam fan. Read the lyrics and figure out what it means
    Code:
At home, drawing pictures of mountain tops
With him on top lemin yellow sun, arms raised in a v
And the dead lay in pools of maroon below
    Daddy didn’t give attention
Oh, to the fact that mommy didn’t care
King jeremy the wicked...oh, ruled his world...
Jeremy spoke in class today... (2x)

Clearly I remember pickin’ on the boy
    Seemed a harmless little ..........
Ooh, but we unleashed a lion...
Gnashed his teeth and bit the recess lady’s breast...
    How can I forget?
And he hit me with a surprise left
My jaw left hurtin’...ooh, dropped wide open
Just like the day...oh, like the day I heard

    Daddy didn’t give affection, no...
And the boy was something that mommy wouldn’t wear
King jeremy the wicked...oh, ruled his world
Jeremy spoke in class today... (3x)
    Woo... (14x)
Try to forget this...try to forget this...
Try to erase this...try to erase this...
    ]from the blackboard...

Jeremy spoke in class today... (2x)
Jeremy spoke in, spoke in... (2x)
    Jeremy spoke in class today...
    Woo... (29x)
    Woooooohhh...spoke in, spoke in...
    Woooooohhh...uh huh, uh huh...

lol, I actually have heard this song -- many many times. I never knew the word was jeremy, I always would sing along
    Tell me spoken...
Yah, I was like wtf too. But thats still what I thought.
I never really paid attention to the rest of the lyrics either - I mean i know what most of the words are and can sing along but I have this amazing ability to beable to not comprehend. ANd i usualy listen to music with out the intention to listen** so the ability is quite handy. Interesting thing to learn.

So like Jeremy in the song is a kid that grew up with crummy parents, and beat some kid up at school when he was harrassed? Good job for him I say, if you harrass me, I'm gonna hit you too.

kind of. He did beat some kid up but he also killed himself. That is what the Jermy spoke in class today part is about. He shot himself in front of the class(you can't get that from the song you have to see the video), but you said you were building a gun at school.

    > you can't get that from the song you have to see the video

Or the story that the song is actually about.

Back to the topic, how big of a GG are you making? What's it going to be firing?

I remember the time I learnt how to shoot. It was with a sporting air pistol and the next door neighbours cat never forgave.
once again, you show how you know little to nothing about what the current thread topic is about. This is not about target shooting or anything of the like, this is a scientific project that is being done for academic reasons and has very little to do about harming animals.
there used to be something here, but not anymore

    About your gauss gun experiment....

    That is pretty cool.

How powerful of a gun are you planning to make for this project? It looks like a little bit of an investment... but I am thinking of buying some of the magnets from their catalog...

The one from their catalog if assembled the instructions on their site fires safely into your hand. But it's pretty fast.

The project really has two phases. The first is making that simple prototype and measuring the increased velocities by experimental values. The second will be building a stronger prototype using electromagnets and a timing circuit and using the actuall math behind the principles to determine expected velocity acceleration and efficiency and compare it to experimental results.
