    Internet Browser

So I've been trying out Netscape 6.2, it's ok i guess, little faster than IE 6. But I'm used to IE 6 so heh. What do you all think? Favorite Browser?

This looks like a good excuse to complain about this...

Whats with downgrade from Netscape 4.0 to 6.2?
I upgraded after 4.0 kept crashing randomly for no apparent, logical, or patterned reason. 6.2 doesnt do this... but... Its slower. When you select "open in new window" it takes two to four seconds to even open the new bloody window. 4.0 did this instantly. Plus, certain graphics get "squished" on certain webpages (no pattern here either). For instance all of the "New Post" buttons on this web page have a white lne running through them. Does anyone else get this?

I also hate the whole "Remember the password for this page?" option window. Is netscape sinking to the aweful so-called "user-friendliness" of IE? Are they asking for security issues? I'll never use IE (Personally, I dont like opening my door to any Virus that wants in, but hey, each to his own) but i'm annoyed at the slow window opening of 6.2. Considering the number of windows i have open whenever i browse... Anywhere from 3 to 6 is the average. I dont like to wait.

... That was a long (and relativly pointless) reply... Ahh, well. I feel better now.

I switched to IE because Netscape kept crashing. Tried to use the new download of Netscape and could not even download files from certain sites. I could not stay on the Internet for more than about a half hour before Netscape performed some illegal operation and had to be shut down. With IE, no problems downloading and I can stay on the Internet for as long as I like. As for security issues I will say that IE is lacking but overall it is much better than buggy Netscape.

    Opera

Honestly though, I use IE more than Opera. Still, opera is a better browser IMO.

I often use StarOffice to get on the Net
    A Clean Record for StarOffice.

However, IE 6 is still in my folder, though.
    1 crash for IE 6.

The Worst choice is Konquerer in KDE. It can't even run plugin's.

Netscape is ... OK. It's the only bowser I can use in Linux that is workable.

Note: IE's does not run good in anything other than AMD and Intel.

    ...

I believe that from a developers perspective Opera is simply the best. It's the only truly standard complaint browser there is. Although the last version i used (can't remember the #) didn't do clipping yet -which is really important for DHTML.

Opera is so standard compliant that running your page thru it is almost as good running it thru an html checker.

Netscape is just a pain in the ass -from the same perspective as before. IE is much better for DHTML, IMHO.

But, really, when it comes down to it, i use IE. Why? Because, as is to be expected, most people don't write good code and IE is very forgiving, whereas Opera is not; so badly coded pages display as intended in IE, they don't in Opera (which is in and of itself a good thing, but i do want to see the pages)

My point is... uhhh what was my point!?

    Oh right! Opera!

    adios,

I use Mozilla--the prototype version of Netscape's 6.x series browser.

Yeah, it's got some performance issues, but in my case, I like it better than IE. Although opening a new window in IE is faster than in Mozilla, getting from clicking on the icon to actually being able to use the webpage is quite a bit longer in IE than on Mozilla(especially with Mozilla's precaching). I also use its mail/news client. It's got some problems(mainly in the interface area), but it's better than most programs.

Both Mozilla and Netscape 6.x are fully standards complient. Far more so than IE.(although some people would argue that IE IS the standard)

If you like Mozilla, but think it's too slow, you might want to try Galeon.

If you're using Linux, Konqueror might be a good choice.

The best thing about Mozilla IMHO is that you can disable javascript commands on a domain by domain basis. I disabled window.writeln, write, open, and create, which totally disables all popups anywhere(although you can make exceptions for domains that have useful popups.). Unfortunately, there's no UI for this yet.

Ahh! Degone evil demon built-in mail client! *makes cross with fingers*
I dont understand why so few people use Netscape. Sure it may have a couple of issues (although i havent had a single crash since my upgrade to 6.2), but isnt having a few browser issues better then getting a virus and have global computer issues (such as not having one that works anymore). I have no virus scanner at all and the only time this computer ever had a virus was when my computer illiterate family member opened an e-mail attachment (.vbs extension.... *smacks forhead*) from someone she didnt even know. It took me days to manually hunt down and kill that sucker (the virus not the family member). The virus scanner i downloaded couldnt remove it, although it could find it. Wow, how useful is that? [/heavy sarcasm]

I have a friends who use IE and pretty have virus-a-day syndrome. I gave up on fixing their computers. I figure i'm not going to help someone whos basically doing it to theirself. One guy inparticular... Nothing that comes within a 10' radius of his computer even gets through my door.

you might want to try Galeon
Excuse my ignorance but... where do I get it? I've never even heard of it before.

Are you saying there are no exploits for Netscape browsers, l.a.d.?

I have never received a virus directly due to use of an IE browser, either. I use both Netscape 6.x and IE 6 considerably for web development.

I received a trojan via email once, as well, which my VS picked up rather quickly.

It sounds to me that your friend(s) has(have) a tough surfing regiment. I doubt that it directly relates to the abilities of the browsers.

Granted, more people write software to attack MS software than others, but since Netscape got bought up (AOL.. now AOL-Time Warner), I expect that an equal number of browser exploit viruses will be released if not already. Not to mention, Netscape is usually at the forefront of Js capabilities (and has been since the beginning of the browser war), and you can do a lot to screw with people with Javascript.

    Galeon = http://galeon.sourceforge.net/

but you need Gnome and Mozilla...

Actually, IE has some "cutting edge" javascript functions like one to set your homepage. Gah. What a blatant exploit.

Netscape's not really into creating more "features" for their browser anymore. It's pretty much nothing more than standards compliant and backwards compatible with 4.7 special tags/functions.

Galeon is based on Mozilla's webpage rendering system, but without all the other stuff Mozilla has.

Its notso much java or javascript that bothers me (the security sandbox is quite tight).....its activeX that is the real worry for me.....just think of all those bugs and viruses that are due to nasty commands being implemented by supposedly "safe for script" AX controls......

Just have a read about.... Look at how the "I love U" bug worked (a more or less simple vb script)......

True true... most Js exploits have been nuisances *only*... for me.

I have only heard of problems with activeX. I never got around to learning much about it tho... so you have me at a loss there...
