    Gift

Well, I have finished school and my parents are going to give me a graduation gift, so we went to unilago http://www.unilago.com.co which is actually a computers only mall here in Bogotá. and we got two possibilities, so I want you to help me choose which one should I choose, I didn't make a poll because you might just vote and don't answer, and I just want suggestions

    1. A Sound Blaster Live! Platinum 5.1 and a Soundworks speaker set (I don't remember the model, but it's the one which works perfectly with the sound card)

    2. An Intel Pentium 4, motherboard, case, and 128Mb RIMM

    the sound set costs $1'450.000
    the P4 costs $1'750.000

they almost cost the same, so I don't know which one to pick in case I can get one.

    Help me out here!!!

Well, that depends if you have a 64-bit OS. I've heard tell that P4's have TERRIBLE 32-bit emulation.

All-in-all I like the idea of a motherboard, case, and RAM over speakers. But that's just me.

    Uhhh...a P4 IS 32bit.

First of all, Pentium 4's are 32 bit, the "ITANIUM" is 64 bit. Second of all, go with option number 2, 5.1 sound isn't too expensive on ebay anymore, so it's not too hard to get. and anyways, 5.1 sound isn't as fun anyways if it's not on a good computer.

personally... i'd go for the p4 combo... that's because i already have my own audio gear outside of the box... [a musician i am, with an rp2000 and a nice fender champ...] and since p4s are top of the line, you're bound to be getting at least a decent upgrade...

but that's just me... and, good one ken...

well, that depends, because I'm not currently in "great need" for a new computer, nor a sound card. I currently have an Intel Pentium 3/500 with 288Mb Ram, and a Sound Blaster 128 PCI, so, as you can see, I'm not in such a great need for anything (well, maybe a new processor, but I son't have any software that needs more than 500MHz), and if I buy the soundcard I can have D3DEAX, which I don't have.

But the Idea of having a new computer is very tempting because it would be completely mine and there would never be any "Oscar, I need to use the computer" things.

Keep the money, in a few months you're starting college (I think). Buy the computer then, you might get both things much cheaper than now. I would also buy the computer in the same city I'd be living, so wait until you start the course. Your actual machine is powerfull enough for you.

hmm, I don't think that's a possibility because the gift's the hardware, not the money.

    >any "Oscar, I need to use the computer"

    that's a plus...

about this, is there any other option? do they think the hardware is something to give since they feel it is practical for you? if practicality is the matter, subtly direct them to something more fitting for you... but of course, material possesion is not of importance, i would agree with practical posessions... and most of all with those contributing to the purification of the mind body and heart...

    >do they think the hardware is something to give since they feel it is practical for you?

I wanted the soundcard, so we went to unilago to ask for it, and while we were on it, we found the P4; so I basically think that I asked for hardware

    >subtly direct them to something more fitting for you...
    such as?

    >and most of all with those contributing to the purification of the mind body and heart...
    such as?

such as whatever it is you truly have an eye for... and if it is these things, then have at it...

such as... hmmm... the onions lightly on top of the orange chicken... or... a warm smile from a nice stranger... or... well orange chicken!

    Lightbulb DA

I think that DA has been looking to his avatar from a short distance for too long time
DA: now look to my avatar for ten minutes, and say what you feel

I just thought that depending on where you're going to study, you might find useful a laptop (they're so powerfull). I'd go for a digital camera.
