    would you use it...

    Hi,
I had discussed this idea here long back...
    http://cboard.cprogramming.com/showthread.php?t=43477

I am planing to go with it now... along with the other features said i could even include a message expiry date.. so if the recipient opens the mail after a given date or time the message will not be shown... (The mail message will have to be stored on the server obviously)....

I have seen some service that have come up in the last 1 month offering the 1st service i mentioned for a charge..

So i would like to know if you were offered such a service for free.. would you use it...

    thanks
    Vasanth

i think its a good idea. but can't we do it already by just having a server and checking the logs to see if an image has been requested?

yea it can be done.... but it is easier to create ID's for each message and add this id along with the image tag... When ever this is requested PHP can make an entry in the database...

but looks like this idea will be unpopular.. (going by the number of votes saying no)...

No, I personally wouldn't use it.

Isn't a `read receipt' similar to your idea?

Sounds like one of those flashy features that wow people at first but really serve no practical purpose. Like a cell phone mp3 player, (yay, 23mins of battery life for music )

I think flashy features are only good if they have a practical use.

I agree. It really serves no useful purpose.

But hey, if you're willing to build it and people are willing to use it, then you have nothing to loose. =)

And I have nothing intelligent to add to this post... Darn it.

Just saw this on SlashDot. Seems like the same thing you were talking about, Vasanth.
Naturally I didn't feel inspired enough to read all the links for you, since I already slaved away for long hours under a blistering sun pressing the search button after typing four whole words! - Quzah

    From http://didtheyreadit.com/
When you use DidTheyReadIt, e-mails that you send are automatically and invisibly tracked. The instant the recipient opens your message, DidTheyReadIt automatically notifies you. Click here for a sample return receipt.
I hate it already "invisibly tracked" is a something that makes me want to puke.

Let's look at the testimonials on that front page:
"Are you as sick of getting the "I never got your email." line as I was? This will eliminate that excuse completely. It really lets you know whom you're dealing with."
What a load of crap. Having tracked someone in this manner is likely to upset them if you told them you'd done it.

In a business world, on an internal email system, this behaviour would be acceptable, but on the public internet, no way.

Of course, I expect this concept is all ready well used by advertising companies.
When all else fails, read the instructions.

As the primary use of 'web bugs' is by spammers Hotmail blocks 'web bugs'. I read that the next version of Outlook will also block them. Assumably, other email software and web mail will follow suit, at least those that haven't already.

By sending you messages that contain special image technology, strangers can discover whether your e-mail address is valid. When you open an e-mail message that contains this type of image, the sender learns that your e-mail address is valid and can continue to send you unsolicited messages. Using the MSN Hotmail Mail image filter, you can prevent these images from opening until you verify their source.
