These countries have chosen to be assimilated into the European Union. Accession occurs Saturday, May 1st 2004.

A little more information can be found here. This page may provide a more US-centred view.

Still, a hearty welcome to the Euro-noobs - you, too, can discover (and pay for via your taxes) a whole new layer of pseudo-political bureaucracy of dubious merit that issues decrees on such world-shaking issues as banana curvature.

A more serious appraisal of consequences for new member states.

    >> I can't believe the EU admitted Turkey <<

They haven't, Turkey is a candidate country. The 10 new members, in this intake are Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary, Cyprus(effectively only the southern half), Malta, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.

They add to the 15 existing members, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

I wish this kind of unity could be formed in Aisa but that seems impossible for a few more centuries...
