    knowledge/reply border

has anyone noticed that there is a certain threshold of questions on the c++ board that no one replies to anymore. I'm only in my third semester of c++, and my last three posts received one somewhat helpful response. It looks like only the "simple" or "newb" questions get answered over and over again, but anything harder gets omitted.... any ideas as to why? could it be that most people are computer engineering and they only get "so high" in cs?

A couple of your recently ignored posts seemed a little too much like homework without a clear display of what you've done already .

I do think that there are other forums that get more activity on intermediate questions than this one. I tend to only answer questions here. The times that I've had questions I've posted them elsewhere. This may also be a reason. No good intermediate/advanced questions, so those who give good intermediate/advanced answers don't come around as often.

actually only one could have been viewed like that....the other ones were all pretty damn nearly worked out.

EDIT:: OK, maybe two could be viewed that way....but it is quite evident I wasn't looking for qode but an algorith suggestion (graph theory thread), no one bothered to reply until I was done with the assignment so I didn't post....

Sorry, dude. I'd help if I could, but I'm just not there yet.

I can't spend much time on any one question since I've got to do good work so I don't get outsourced.

I think it is more a case of who is online, and when.

I rarely go to the C/C++ boards any more except to moderate. I simply don't have the time. Perhaps some of the "heavy" helpers on those boards are away, or have left - it happens, people get fed up with helping.

There is a difference between genuine help seekers and the myriad of spoilers that just want someone to do their work for them. When confronted by a page or more of new posts, 15 minutes to look, and a bunch of whinging whining lazy good for nothings, the temptation to get on with something else is hard to resist.

If you're referring to messages like this, there are many answers

    1. It wasn't a C++ question - there was no code
    2. It was optional homework - goes to the bottom of the pile below even urgent homework
    3. This site is really aimed at newbie coding problems which are reasonably quick to answer. I spend on average no more than a couple of minutes on fixing coding type problems.

Your question would have required several hours of work to research and answer properly - something which you should now be capable of doing yourself. People simply don't have that kind of time to spend on one single post.

I could have posted a couple of URLs to where you might find additional information, but I figured someone with over 1000 posts should have figured out google by now.

I AM capable of doing it myself, I just wanted some suggestions. Some of these problems are might be similar to the ones people have already taken, so I was only looking for a quick hint. I never wanted you to implement a modified version of the quicksort for the first problem, or something similar....

yeah, I did search google, but unfortunately it did not return anything worthwhile and pertinent to my questions....hence I posted on the board.......

Some questions are harder than others. What I usually do is look at the title first. If it's "please help!!1!1!11!" then I almost always ignore it, excluding the times I feel like posting "Search the board" or "Read the FAQ" or "DON'T ADD .H TO IOSTREAM!!!". Then I look to see if there is code posted, and if it is a hello world program. Finally, I actually read the post, and if I know the answer, I usually post. Occasionally, I do some reaserch on the subject to learn for myself and help others. That's how I look at posts - make sure your posts don't look like lazy, helpless people's posts.

and let this thread be a lesson to all who've yet to realize, I am sillyI am sillyI am sillyI am sillyI am sillying as in real life, gets you nothing but contempt.

not much else to be said.

anyway on the topic, i hardly bother answering questions at all anymore... either i get beat to it, i dont feel like answering it, or i get to tired or reading erroneous replies... or get tired of newbies who think their not newbies telling you what they just asked you to tell them... most of them know it all already so i just give it up... so now im just a smart ass(trying to get over it now)... anything else is not worth my time, most of the questions advanced or other have already been answered or clued enough to count as an answer... hence the concept of a newbie forum is fatally flawed to endless repetition and eventual destruction... hmmm...

    General non-targeted observation:
sometimes the best answer to a question is no answer because it teaches you how to find out for yourself, and in most cases you learn more. discipline and self reliance - the keys to life.

The first post I saw of yours about some sort contained a ton of code. There's no way in hell I would have gone through all that code for a non-specific question that you asked.
