    I don't know...

I don't know the answer to this. Nobody I know... knows the answer to this. I used to know the answer to this...

do you... and if so can you tell me?

What is greater than God, More evil than the devil, The poor have it, The rich need it, And if you eat it, you'll die?

    The answer is nothing:

    Nothing is greater than God
Nothing is more evil than the devil
    The poor have nothing
    The rich need nothing
And if you eat nothing, you die.

Huh? What are you talking about? I totally don't understand your riddle. It is 30 dollars to the clerk or, what? I don't get it. Can you explain it a little more?

    here it is...

three guys go to a hotel, the room is 30 bucks... they pay the clerk, and the clerk gives 5 bucks to the bellhop... the bellhop gives one dollar each back to the three guys when he goes to their room... so that means that each guy actually paid 9 bucks per room... however... 9 * 3 + 2 = 29... where's the buck?

You can't do that... Even if they get 3 bucks back, that doesn't mean that they paid only 9 bucks each... Does it? I don't think so... !!! Oh, if they paid only 9 bucks each in the first place, it wouldn't amount to 30 bucks in the end! Then, they didn't PAY 30 bucks in the first place... So, there couldn't be thirty bucks.

But, then , they would pay 27 bucks and there doesn't equal to 29 bucks... I dunno... *sigh* ::Knocking myself on the head::

It's right. The hotel made $25 and the bellhop made $2.

    25 + 2 = 27

    9 * 3 = 27

    or originally:

    25 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 30

    10 * 3 = 30

Just need to look at it from the right perspective.

What special method, double? I give up...

Btw, Strider, real cool avatar there, how did you get that? It is from a movie or something? And is your name David, or Strider? huh?

Back to the original topic, what is wrong with our "backtracking" method?

How is it backtracking? As long as you realize that the hotel made $25 and the bellhop made $2 and that those variables will never change. The only amounts altered are the amounts paid by the 3 guys and they amounts paid back to the 3 guys.

Not true, the hotel room could have been $20 or any other amount but then that would change everything.

The movie is the Fellowship of the Rings based on J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings Trilogy. It is due to hit theatres December 19, 2001.

Strider is the alias for the character Aragorn in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

My real name is obviously David, I just like to use that alias. If you haven't guessed yet, I am a big Tolkien fan.
