    GMail

    Coming soon...

Gmail is a free, search-based webmail service that includes 1,000 megabytes (1 gigabyte) of storage. The backbone of Gmail is a powerful Google search engine that quickly recalls any message an account owner has ever sent or received. That means there's no need to file messages in order to find them again.

well, i was thinking something like this was going to come along now that a GB of space is less than a dollar(probably less if they get bulk deals), makes sense to spend alittle money as they will have more people going through their site.

Well, it costs them about $2 per gig, and not that many people are gonna use that storage, except if they use it as a spam bucket.

I'm getting one as soon as it goes public.

    >now that a GB of space is less than a dollar

With single harddisks, it's only a dollar per GB. But keep in mid that this is not a single hard disk and hopefully even backed up, so costs go up accordingly.

really? I know a few friends who work at the local nuclear plant, Arkansas Nuclear One, and they purchase HDs by the bulk for all the computers they have(they have to keep backups of everything for a few years, so the HDs add up), and they can usually get 50 to 60 cents as the price per GB.

Yes, but they are still buying single consumer HDs, not Storage Solutions. Storage solutions that are mirrored plus the back up equipment to keep backups and do it online ( you don't want your mailer to go down for an hours per day for backups, do you ? ) cost a good lot more than some HD from the next store.

    2. How much does Gmail cost?

Gmail is a free service and includes 1,000 megabytes of storage with each account. However, Gmail is still in preview mode as we test it to work out the kinks. So for now, it's not generally available.
The first post said it. Look it up if you don't believe it.

    1 GB per user....

lets say 100,000 users (just for kicks)....

that is 100,000 GB of space allocated freely to the public....

they must have a lot of money....

Considering that I read that yahoo has over 52 million users...I'd up your counting a bit....

But then again this does make sense....yahoo is developing it's own new engine and plans to move away from google, microsoft says it's going to come out with a new search engine that is even better, and I thought I heard that AOL was going to move away soon. Google needs to start finding ways to latch on to its customers, and this is one way that's going to blow them outta the water.

But 1 GB is not logic any way because if it is really for free imagine the number of users that will make e-mail accounts and lets see how many GB will be used

I also wonder who really needs that his mail account reaches 1 GB byte of storage !!!!!!!!!!!
