    Sat

I took the SAT today, I think I did alright.

I'm not sure how the scoring works, but for anyone whose taken it, this my reflection it:

The math I did well on, worst case scenario maybe 5 blanks and 3 wrong answers. For the whole test.

English/Reading, worst case 12 blanks and 8 wrong answers. For the whole test.

What was your reaction to the test, and how did you end up doing?

there are bridges that currently await you jumping off of them.

I'm an ardent non-believer in standardized tests. If you don't let me write, you shouldn't try to judge my abilities in english. And, anyway, i think i did much worse than i should have done on the SATs--but then again, who am i to judge my own intelligence?

    BORING

you're another one of those 'i don't believe in standardized tests because I'm intelligent but i did poorly boo hoo'

let's get some objective facts on the SAT:

1 - they're used for college admissions boards as another dimension to help weed out the thousands of applicants they receive.

    2 - being intelligent doesn't necessarily mean you're a college bound student.

3 - performing well on the sat IS indicative of intelligence: if you did well, chances are you're not stupid. Otherwise what proof do they have?

4 - I didn't do spectacularly well on them so STFU

    EDIT:
who am i to judge my own intelligence?
who cares what YOU think...you've got to make yourself stand out for the college admissions persons that need to drool over thousands of other people that 'judge their own intelligence' and all of that crap. Make life easier, just take the sat until you do well on it

    Thumbs down

i think the SATs are useless .

you can enroll into a community college, take some piddlya$$ed placement test and enroll. then a year or two later, transfer into a university. no SATs, or ACT, just the community college's placement test score and any state mandated college entrance/continuation exam (in TX its the TASP, unelss they've changed the name).

all i know is that the first time i took the SAT (my sophmore year) i scored a whopping 750 (it doesn't pay to stay up all night watching tv the night before). the next time i took it, my junior year i scored an 1150 (or thereabouts - more than 1100, less than 1200).

but then again, what do i care, I'm done with school in may, so i'll just need to concentrate on finding a job or grad school (and the program i'm looking at is no longer requireing the GRE )

SATs are not useless, as I said they help college admissions officers weed out the thousands of applicants. But they definitely don't show everything. What counts more is solid grades and being involved with school and such.

Some universities such as the Brigham Young University campuses don't look at SAT scores, though, so if you're considering going there, then try to do well on the ACT.

I can't say I'm a real big fan of the SAT either. I'll grant you that it is another factor for colleges to consider in a process that is largely anonymous (for most colleges, that is), but it isn't clear that it really tests anything of much use. Certainly, the verbal bit is slightly ridiculous. What does it say that you know a series of random words (the parts that test your ability to comprehend a piece of text seem much more useful). And the math problems don't really seem to test your ability to think. I think the ACT, because of its science section that gets more into logical thinking is a better test in this regard.

Silvercord: I didn't whine about the SATs, i said two things:

1.) Don't judge me one english if you don't allow me to write.
    2.) I don't think i did as well as i should have.

And when i said "Who am i to judge my intelligence?" i was not being sarcastic. How in hell can i say how smart I am? I don't see how my judgement is reasonable enough in that matter to be substatiated.

    also:
    >> did poorly

    i got a 1290. i don't consider that "poorly".

    >> they're used for college admissions boards as another dimension to help weed out the thousands of applicants they receive.

NAH! they are used by the CIA to track everyone and do research with apes and cammomile tea!!! . Any non-moron person who has been through high school in the modern era knows what you said.

    >> performing well on the sat IS indicative of intelligence: if you did well, chances are you're not stupid. Otherwise what proof do they have?

The essay that you have to write in order to get into 90+% of colleges. Your grades. Your references.

It is completely possible and feasible that you are really smart and get great grades in school, but the way the SAT tests you hinders you so you get 100-1000 points less than you really should have. Just because you think the right thoughts from a different perspective or in a different way doesn't mean you are stupid.

    >> STFU

    right back at ya.

the point is there is a need for standardized test taking as a part of the process to weed out potential applicants. SAT scores are typically 10-30% of that process (weighed with everything else), and it's just *really* annoying having 'ardent non-believers' complain about it thinking they could comprise a better system that would work for everybody. If you really are some great free-thinking open minded person that you make yourself out to be, then you'd step back from the fact that it's not perfect, that the way it is setup might have hindered your performance a bit, and realize it's necessary, instead of being an ardent non believer hoo ha.

I agree that standardized testing is necessary. I just think it is testing the wrong things. Though, I know the SAT is changing (sometime next year, I believe) to include an essay (and I don't remember what the other changes are). That'll certainly make it a bit better.

zach there will always be people that won't be satisfied with it, but I'm glad for my kid sister's sake that it is changing. The basic facts remain the same though, if you do well on it, you're probably a good candidate. If you don't do well on it, it doesn't necessarily mean anything. I mean, I hope you guys don't think I actually *like* the freaking SAT. I loathe standardized testing. But I can also be objective and point out it's potentially good points too.

    Ok.

it's just *really* annoying having 'ardent non-believers' complain about it thinking they could comprise a better system that would work for everybody.
I never said that i have a better system. I never said that we needed a change. I only said i am a non-believer in the STANDARDIZED TEST SYSTEM that our country has adopted. I never specifically pointed out a test that i think is horrible, i just don't think that our system of standardized tests is at the level it should be. I don't really have ways to fix it... but i guess the first step is recognizing the problem (it has been recognized to death, but i figure i'll haunt it beyond the grave).

If you really are some great free-thinking open minded person that you make yourself out to be, then you'd step back from the fact that it's not perfect, that the way it is setup might have hindered your performance a bit, and realize it's necessary, instead of being an ardent non believer hoo ha
Ugh. I'd like to believe that i'm a "great free-thinking open minded person" , but, in truth, i'm am as flawed as every other human is.

And: You are trying to tell me that i shouldn't point out the flaws in a system just because said system is "neccessary"? you said that SATs were 10%-30% of your college admittance information (or they are weighed 10-30... or something very similar); even if we give you the benefit of the doubt and say a college takes SATs 30% into account, it is still not "neccessary". That 30% could easily be split up into other phases and have the SATs effectively removed (i.e. you could put some percentage points into the essay, the interview, academics, extra-curricular, and leadership roles--to name a few). In making this arguement, though, i am ignoring the most blatant problem with your statement.

The logic is totally off. You are saying "it's necessary; don't question it". Where would we be if we followed that philosophy?

Business: "well, we've gotta have people sell us stuff in order for this money to have value and for our country to be economically successful. It's neccesary: don't question it. It doesn't matter that 3 sprawling conglamorates are controlling prices and ruining any competition and reaking havoc on the the ideals that we hold so much faith in. In colsing: it's necessary. Shut up."

We should always try to better ourselves and everything around us. Ignoring the flaws in something because it is necessary is (plain and simply) stupid--especially when we have the ability to fix it.

I do stand out in at least one way. I am one of the top 1,000 high school writers in the nation and the essay that i send in is the one that won (in part) me that honor.

I already got into the college of my choice, anyhow, so it doesn't really matter now.
