I was toying with the idea of starting to use Linux for a long time now... For various reasons.... But now some how now i feel i should try out FreeBSD instead... I am quite new to *NIX environments...
what would you suggest.. and why woyuld you choose one over the other..

bsd has a portage system that is close to but(IMO) not as good as gentoo's. BSD istalled faster, but BSD is usually for servers; it is now becoming more and more popular for desktop environments. look here

Both Linux and *BSD have distributions that are running from a bootable CD without the need to install anything.
Test both and see what you like. I personally think the devil is way cooler than the penguin, but then, maybe you should base your decision on technical facts

BSD for Linux users is your link. I'd go on about what little I know about BSD but in the end about everything I know was from that site. Also, here's the accompanying Slashdot article, if you want to see what others have to say on that article.
To tell the truth, I'd be trying/using BSD right now if I knew that a few pieces of my hardware would work.
You got your FreeBSD crowds and you got your Linux crowds. Linux is much easier to use and more open than FreeBSD; FreeBSD is more closed up and harder to use. Linux keeps coming out with new technologies, even if they aren't stable yet; FreeBSD works on proven technology and makes it better.
If Linux and FreeBSD were politicians, Linux would be a liberal and FreeBSD would be a conservative.
All this is IMHO. I used FreeBSD for little over 6 months, and I've used Linux for a year now.
My opinion is that Linux is a superior desktop, and FreeBSD is in some cases a superior server, most cases Linux is superior. A FreeBSD server can get set up a little faster than a Linux server, but IMHO a Linux server that is set up correctly is superior to a FreeBSD server.
Just like everyone else has said, try them both out. I used to love FreeBSD to death, but I switched back to Linux and I'm never looking back.

If you've never used *nix, I would definitely try linux first.
Redhat would be good for starting out. Get redhat 9, not fedora yet.
i decided to broaden beyond mandrake so i have downloaded the lastest versions of RH, dabien, freeBSD, slackware, and one i cant member....
