    bovine spongiform encephalopathy

Just got back from vacation and I didn't see any threads about this...I thought it was pretty big news: First apparent U.S. case of mad cow disease discovered

I won't be eating ground beef for a while!

Why? You're not going to get sick from eating ground beef.

Well, I'm just being over-cautious, but no one really knows much about it and the most likely way you are going to get it is from eating tainted meat...And there's really no way to "kill" mad cow disease, so you can't just thoroughly cook the meat to get rid of it. Sure, it's not likely that you'll get the disease from ground beef, but it won't hurt me to stay away from it...

There's also evidence the cow came into the country from Canada.

Oh yeah, that was the other reason...I had no idea we got cows from Canada! I've probably been eating Canadian beef for years now...

You won't contract mad cow from one hamburger, you have to ingest a lot of the bad protien in order for the nervous disorder to happen.

How do you know that? There's not enough evidence to tell one way or another...

Why do you doubt research enough to not eat ground beef, but remain willing to eat other muscle-cuts?

    From the CDC:

To reduce the possible current risk of acquiring vCJD from food, travelers to Europe or other areas with indigenous cases of BSE or at possibly increased risk of BSE may wish to consider either:

    (1) avoiding beef and beef products altogether or

    (2) selecting beef or beef products, such as solid pieces of muscle meat (versus calf brains or beef products such as burgers and sausages), which might have a reduced opportunity for contamination with tissues that may harbor the BSE agent.

The human form is probably one of the most overhyped diseases around.

Very sad for those who catch it, but the numbers of those affected are pretty insignificant when measured as a proportion of the population

    http://www.cjd.ed.ac.uk/figures.htm

Compare the total figure over 13 years (927) with the far greater amount of people that die of flu every year in the UK (I read somewhere that that figure can be 3000-4000 per year)
