Hey Hybrid I'd love for you to post a link backing up what you said about marijuana, kthx.

Hell, I'll just skip a step. There is no credible study that does. Why? Nobody CAN test it. The only thing they know for sure is that SMOKING it is bad for you. Smoking anything is bad for you in the same respect.

I don't do anything but occasionally drink, but I can't stand people who are so grossly uninformed. Marijuana should be legal, but there's such a social stigma that it's still condemned without real proof.

Also, chris is an ass, but who didn't know that already?

    For Ken-

Q: What does marijuana do to the brain?

A: Some studies show that when people have smoked large amounts of marijuana for years, the drug takes its toll on mental functions (4). Heavy or daily use of marijuana affects the parts of the brain that control memory, attention, and learning. A working short-term memory is needed to learn and perform tasks that call for more than one or two steps.

Smoking marijuana causes some changes in the brain that are like those caused by cocaine, heroin, and alcohol. Scientists are still learning about the many ways that marijuana can affect the brain.

    Oh, the link.
    Such is life.

so does drinking, and I dont see anyone here outcrying against drinking. It should be legalized but regulated like tobacco and alcohol so kids can't get into it. in closing: If you enjoy it, use it.

There is no misinformation here ken.

I can not think of a more reputable source than New Scientist.

From the New Scientist article: "The overall weight of evidence is that occasional use of cannabis has few harmful effects overall"

So basically, there's a weak correlation that people who are genetically predisposed to schizophrenia might increase that risk by smoking. That's not much of a reason to keep it illegal, if you ask me.

Please, if you will, rationalize why Marijuana should stay illegal. That's really what I wanted to hear - why do you think it should be illegal? Why do you care what people do recreationally if it doesn't harm anyone? How is Marijuana worse for you than 90% of what's out there?

Also, Fountain, I wouldn't trust what an anti-drug institute has to say about things. I realize it lists individual studies when you click that (4), but I'd have to read those completely in context to really see.

I have a problem with it because it's self destructive, and alltogether pointless.

It should stay illegal because it is proven to have detrimental effects to health, whether that's only with daily use or not, you can't regulate how often someone does something that is legal.

I think smoking should be illegal too for the same reasons.

If people had been aware of the risks of smoking it would never have been legalised. Drinking alcohol is proven to have some health benefits.

    >>It's not worse than 90% of what's out there.

Made up a number. A number of presription drugs can have awful side effects, alcohol turns your liver to swiss cheese, and cigarettes give you lung cancer and more. All are legal.

    >>I have a problem with it because it's self destructive, and alltogether pointless.

So are a lot of things. Skydiving is pointless. Let's make it illegal.

    >>It should stay illegal because it is proven to have detrimental effects to health, whether that's only with daily use or not, you can't regulate how often someone does something that is legal.<<

The government could heavily regulate it if it so chooses. Also, I would say its detrimental effects are completely unproven as of now.

    >>If people had been aware of the risks of smoking it would never have been legalised.<<

The government could make it illegal at any time. It doesn't, though.

    >>Drinking alcohol is proven to have some health benefits.

Here's a gigantic hole in your logic. Before you said that you thought marijuana should stay illegal because it "has detrimental effects to health" - so does Alcohol. And its benefits to health are incredibly minimal. Here's a list of marijuana's positive aspects: regulating the appetite, treating glaucoma, treating multiple sclerosis, treating Tourette's syndrome, treating Parkinson's Disease, treating Alzheimer's, controlling nausea in chemo patients, treating arthritis, anxiety relief, pain relief, its neuroprotective effects, and even treating cancer and inhibiting tumors.

So the question now becomes: When does something's benefits outweigh the negative aspects?

The government wouldn't make smoking illegal, unless they have some sort of death wish. There is no way they'd win the next election doing that, there are too many smokers. Here in Aus smoking is now illegal in all eating areas and has recently become illegal in pubs. It is still legal in gaming areas (pokies) though.

The US government also made Alcohol illegal once, and that worked wonderfully. Once you mke a drug legal there is little going back, which is why more research should be done, and until more is known it should stay illegal.

If marijuana can treat all those illnesses I don't have a problem with it becoming prescription only, but it's only a stop gap at best. The NSW premier here in Aus tried to get a prescription only trial up and running but it was quickly knocked down.

As for sky diving well, I'd hardly call that self destructive unless you do it without a chute.

And the last alcohol health benifits I was aware of were back during the Civil War era (Before strong pain killers). They used to drunken someone before surgery. Now there is no use for alcohol. It destroys your liver. Pot can mess with your lungs. We all know that. The usage of a water pipe eliminates 99% of that risk meaning it would take a lot of usage to equil to a cigarrette. With that said there is no proven hard evidence linking marijuana to brain disorders. Also if you havent realised yet, I wanted to do that via private messaging to as to NOT irritate moderators, since this isn't really a good thread for the board.

Shut up. You shouldn't have had any illegal substance at school, and I'm glad you were suspended. Also, there are slight benefits to your heart from alcohol.

Same here, I think it's a fine idea because smoke really sucks as a smell.

    >>As for sky diving well, I'd hardly call that self destructive unless you do it without a chute.

I'll bet chute failure rate is about the same as the rate of mental illness derived from usage of marijuana. I'd hardly call marijuana use self-destructive either.

Like I said, people are grossly uninformed about things. They just hear the word "drug" and jump all over it. Also, I don't see why it should be perscription only - I think it should be only sold to people after a certain age, like Alcohol. But then again I also whole-heartedly support a reduced age limit for alcohol consumption. All the current law does is increase alcohol abuse.

    >>The US government also made Alcohol illegal once, and that worked wonderfully.

No it didn't. It was one of the worst social experiments ever. Unless you were being sarcastic - I'm not sure.

    >>which is why more research should be done, and until more is known it should stay illegal.

Eh, that's a grey area with me.

Yes I was being sarcastic. The point was that once you've legalised something you've got no chance, or very little chance, of banning it again.

It's impossible to test out every possible outcome of ingesting marijuana in some form, so all I'm saying is do a few years (3? 4?) of studies, see what comes up, weigh its potential harm against its potential good, then legalize it or not based on that. Don't just go "lol drugs r bad" and make it illegal.

Now I'm more interested in why you feel the need to protect people from themselves, though. Darwinism is .

People can be verry stupid.. Say for instane the school board, they defonantly need protection from themselvs! But I do agree with you, if they want to harm themselvs why not let them? As long as they don't harm anyone or anything else... O, wait...

Somehow that sounds like a myth to me...Let's see some proof

I can't see how it is possibly good to be smoking marijuana at your age. Not only could it cause brain disorders (possibly because you are still developing), but it also contributes to violent behavior and depression...As if teen suicide wasn't bad enough.

That said, I almost completely agree with Ken (especially the Darwinism part ), but before we change anything we need to know what its side effects are...

I said that. Do trials. Don't just legalise it or you could end up with something like what happened with cigarettes.

I have a cold I can't put up a good argument at the moment.
