    Hyundai Accent.

Anyone got experience with a Hyundai, ideally an Accent? Anything one should know before buying one - horror stories - delighted users - that kind of thing?

I have a Hyundai Elantra, which is a step up from the accent. I bought it brand new, 2001, and so far no problems. I've already put 55K miles on it, and all I do is change oil (synthetic) every 4-4.5K miles, and other regular maintenance, ie breaks pads, tires.

I'm very satisfied from the purchase; for 11.5K USD I couldn't ask for more....fully automatic with a manual tranny.

As far as hyundais go, I wouldn't get one older then 2000...their reviews where horrible until that year.

I have a Hyundai Excel, it's an older mid 80's model. The guy I bought it from actually bought it brand new in the 80's and kept it in very good condition. He had such a good experience with his Hyundai that when he sold it to me he went out and bought a new Hyundai. I believe he bought a sonata can't remember.

I have heard this as well. I have also heard that Hyundai's from the 1980's are very bad cars. This could be true, and maybe the only reason that mine is still ok is because of the low mileage it has.

    They are sheds.

Buy a nice Honda. There, I said it!

They have always, and always will be regarded as sheds in UK.

The car dealer doesn't have a Honda or a Kia - just a Hyundai Accent.

When I was in the UK I drove Rover cars - they were the best cars I've ever had. My Toyota isn't bad either.

I've personally replaced an automatic transmission in an Hyundai Elantra - which was totaled out 2 weeks later in a crash - could have killed the person that hit the car. All that work up destroyed in an instant. Depressing.

Overall the owner was pleased with the car but the auto tranny did poop out under the 50000 mile mark. Not good.

I also would not buy a Kia - one of my friends has one and it is a piece of trash - he's trying to get rid of it as I speak.

Good cars to look into are Acura, Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi (now - especially the Eclipse).

Out of those I would prob trust Toyota's the most. Mits's have had tranny problems in the past with first generation synchros but they claim to have fixed those in the 2nd generation and 3rd generation models.

Another of my colleagues had a Nissan Maxima which was a very good, fast, reliable, and fun car to drive. Quite costly but worth it all. Good cars.

Don't know much about Acura's but those who own them seem to be quite happy with them.

Unfortunately I would not buy any American made car simply because they just don't last. I wish it were different but its not.

I've definitely got to agree. They have a tendency to last forever.

Well, by a "nice" Honda if you have the extra 5K USD in your pocket. A civic with the same options that I have on my Elantra goes for about 17K USD....and Honda's warranty does not even come close to my 10year/100K miles which Hyundai offers on all their models in the US. Only big difference is that Hondas resale value is much higher then Hyundai's.

EDIT:: out of curiosity, what is the warrnty on a Hyundai in the UK? other parts of EU?

Perhaps. Mine's an older one. I've heard the new ones are very reliable/durable as well though (more so than the old ones).

Kia is garbage. So is the Pontiac Grand Am. I owned one, and I swear to never own another.

The point is moot now. I went to look at the car this morning - liked it. Went home to ask the wife if she wanted to come with me when I took it for a test drive, (she didn't), phoned the guy to tell him I'd back to test it alone - he told me that during the time it had taken for me to get home and chat to the wife - another guy had come - taken one look at it and bought it without even driving it!
