ima stupid newbie redhat user help me!

ok im trying to put aim on it. i go to the page that has the download and download the file strait into my root directy. im logged in as root

    the instructions to install are

    Installation Instructions for RPM
    1. Download AIM onto your system.
    2. Log in as root.
    3. On the command line, type the rpm command as shown in the example: rpm -i aim-1.5.286-1.i386.rpm where 1.5.286-1 represents the AIM version and release numbers.
    4. To install a higher version of AIM, use the rpm upgrade option, for example: rpm -U aim-1.5.286-1.i386.rpm
    5. To run AIM, log in as a regular user, and type "/usr/bin/aim" on the command line.

so i type "rpm -i aim-1.5.286-1.i386.rpm" but it says error no such file or directory..

    You suck.

"On the command line, type the rpm command as shown in the example: rpm -i aim-1.5.286-1.i386.rpm where 1.5.286-1 represents the AIM version and release numbers."

Find out what the current version is.

    Actually, just use GAIM.

Whatever, use GAIM then. Sorry, I'm really not sure how RPM works, I'm just too used to portage.

    Install Gentoo, problem solved .

Redownload the file. Rename it to something easy like tada! aim. then do the rpm file thing (don;t use it so don't know the exts) and then install.

type at the console: man rpm

    -i is used for installing

also, use the tab button for autocomplete
ex: you're typing: rpm -i aim- [TAB]
that would fill in the rest of the filename if it exists in your current directory (and [TAB] means hit the tab key)

your problem was you typed the name wrong.

btw: redhat's not going in development any longer, now it'll be redhat enterprise which costs money. look into fedora, but redhat 9 is pretty new so its ok for now.
