Thread: baseball card discovery

About a year ago I bought a house which was build around the 1950's. A few days back I begun remodelling my kitchen (which was untached since the house's creation). Today, while destroying all the old cabinets, I have found a collection of rather old and peculiar items hidden behind one of them.

Firstly, there is a set (about 50 ) baseball cards, I'm not sure what year they are from, but there was also a ewspaper dated '64, so I'm guessing they have to be circa 1960. Anyways, I have no idea if they could be worth anything...but I know that a lot of maniacs (no offense ) will pay a lot of money for them. There a bunch of Cubbies cards, reds and yankees. Anyone know where I could get a valid pricing on them?

a card show. Check your area... they pop up from time to time in malls and civic centers and such

I was hoping for some good online resource. I now narrowed it to years '65 and '66.

the most expensive card I have checked so far is the A.L. HOME RUN LEADERS. On that site priced at $45 NM.

You could look at beckett.com but it looks like they require a membership...I used to look through their magazines or whatever they're called

Yeah just buy a 2003/2004 becket. They usually have just about every made card/set in them depending on the maker and age.

I actually used this site: http://www.pricemycard.com. Right now I'm in the process of looking these cards up. The most valueble one so far is game 3 of world series at $60NM, but I also have all the world series cards from all the games. Maybe this will be worth even more.

What do you guys think? should I go to a local card shop or use ebay to sell these?

ebay with the starting price of the becket cost. It will bring you in more money if you get buyers.

It seems like you have no experience with cards, but there are many factors when assessing a card's condition.

The centering of the card (back and front) left to right, top to bottom. The surface of the card, the corners, and the edges.

The bad thing about putting them on ebay is you dont know what they are worth, but people also cant handle the card and look at it in detail.

Bringing them to a card show, you can get several estimates and wont get cheated that way.

Looking it up in a Beckett is the best bet (everyone goes by it) then you know your range, at least before you go the show.

I dont collect baseball cards so I cant help you out.

But if there are any cards, which are rare and are in good condition, it can easily exceed the price in the beckett.

And as I mentoined earlier you cant really see the condition on the card from a scan, so you may not get many bidders that way. Graded cards are the best to sell on ebay.

thanks for all the advice guys, but unfortunatelly not all the cards are in a very good condition. Some have bent corners, and some colors have faded away; after all, they have been behind kitchen cabinets for almost 40 years. I decided to keep the cards, even thought I do not collect them. Hey, maybe if I ever have a son, he will collect cards, and just think what a treat it will be for him.
