    WMA vs. MP3

    which one would you choose? i would definately go with the MP3 for all purposes... if i was a band creating music, I would use MP3 and if i was a consumer buying (hehe) music, I would pick an MP3 over WMA... i just never liked WMA...

    I don't have a very good ear for music, so I go with WMA over MP3 based purely on size of the file.

    I like Ogg Vorbis.
    Naturally I didn't feel inspired enough to read all the links for you, since I already slaved away for long hours under a blistering sun pressing the search button after typing four whole words! - Quzah

    Ogg all the way. It's almost exactly the same as MP3 (In some cases better), plus you can write code for it and not worry about being hunted down by over-zealous patent infringment-specialising law firms.

    MP3 advantages
    * Most widely used.
    * Acceptably good compression.
    * Abundance of encoders and decoders.
    * Everybody knows what an mp3 is.

    MP3 disadvantages
    * Patented
    * Has a "piracy/napster" reputation that will never go away.

    Ogg Vorbis advantages
    * Free, open file format.
    * Good quality strong compression.

    Ogg Vorbis disadvantages
    * Few encoders and decoders.
    * Not very widely used, (kazaa doesnt even class .ogg as music).
    * Stupid name.

    WMV advantages
    * Good quality strong compression.
    * Widely used.
    * Abundance of encoders and decoders.

    WMV disadvantages
    * Microsoft are behind it.
    * Patented.
    * There are various restrictions in place.

    They say that if you play a Windows Install CD backwords, you hear satanic messages. That's nothing; play it forward and it installs Windows.
