    CD experiment

I've developed the beginning concepts for an "experiment" with a CD... basically, just something to do for fun. Is there any chance that someone here knows the vaporization temperature for a CD? Or the temperature at which it will at least ignite? I'm thinking about using inductance to heat it.

That's a tough question - you see most cd's are a poly carbon I believe, but with an aluminum type covering to make them reflective. So even if you knew the ignition point of the plastic, it would be slightly different on account of the metal. You could do a test I suppose...

Well, I plan on doing a test, but I'd like to get the numbers approximately correct first so that I can do the computations and not have to change this thing too much after I build it. Testing it with a flame wouldn't really be the same, because it would heat differently...and it would be difficult to take the temperature. I saw in a few places that the melting temp. of polycarbonate is approx. 200C (400F), and that the flash ignition point is 600C (1200F? I don't have a calculator handy). Does this sound right to anyone?

600 degrees Celsius is 1112.0 degrees Fahrenheit...

Yeah me, I got to fire up my temperature conversion page and do the calculation...heh

No idea about the other figures though...
