All I was saying was that you act as though scientists 60 years ago were idiots and that they would have allowed a bomb to go off that could have destroyed the earth. Unless you provide some proof to your claims, these fears are as senseless as those people who think cloning is going to lead to massive armies of super people.
Hehe oh the naivity of the young. The scientists then had no more idea then than a high school student now.

'see Brians post' , and there are LOTS more respected people who feared the worst. Maybe you have proved yourself wrong however, as the US scientists could NOT predict what would happen (after lots of tests), and yet they still did it! Explain that one in modern terms.

Oh and PJ-you were right in your apology bit. Thats what I meant.

    >>The scientists then had no more idea then than a high school student now<<
Right, because any high schooler now could develop calculus, split an atom, explain the universe in multi-dimensions, build a nuclear bomb etc. You honestly think that any high schooler is as smart as Einstein and the other great scientists of the early 20th century? You keep saying these things but show no proof other than just a plain assumption that it was 60 years ago so therefore they must be idiots. These people actually understood what they were doing for the most part because they were the ones who created the theories. Who do you think understands calculus better, the person who created it or the high school student who is memorizing integral tables from a book?

Brian's post doesn't mean anything for the very reason FYB joked about. Obviously it was a joke because there is no way that bet could be serious, therefore the whole dialogue was a joke. At best, you can only guess that they were even a miniscule serious. Name one respected person who had a decent knowledge of nuclear science who feared the worst and show proof that he felt this way.

Sure, I'll be happy to debate with you on this, but only after you show some proof to this claim other than just saying that its true.

PJ-I thought you were my friend

Trust me, the US scientists had NO idea what the hell would happen.

Do the usual crap and Google (wont insult you by posting the link )

    You will find the answers.

Remember, that now there is more CPU power etc in a mobile phone than there was in the entire first space shuttle launch, see how times change.

Hmmm that maybe was not a good anolgy-take it as you will.

Unless PJ, you are taught (in US) about the POSITIVE sides of the Nukeing, and NOT about what the hell COULD have happened.

WHY dont you believe me? I am old enough to be your dad (or G/Father maybe) and I remember lots of events/have history. To be honest it would be pointless me lying to you with search engines at your own disposal. Just believe me. And hey, UK (hate that) GREAT BRITAIN has done some baaaad things in the past-we live with it, so should you.
    Such is life.

Oh I nearly forgot-stuff the calculus etc bit, and the smart face! Science has evolved expedentially since then, so your statement is TOTALLY FALSE. Our scientists and teachers then knew NOTHING about what we know now.

Trust me, its just the way it is. Calculus does NOT (in WW11) define wether or not we blow up the whole world!. We needed NEW sciences that really evolved 60's/70's with the cold war to sort it.

BTW I HATE French people for doing all them Nuke tests years ago, when:

A: US/UK offered them the same test results.

B: They didnt give a damn

C: They are soft as sh t and wouldnt fire the damn things anyway

You see-my dream is to see all of
USA, but not France! I DO like ALL US people-just admit you couldve killed all our world!

Remember the 50yr secrecy law? Hmm or is that just the HONEST UK? Anyway do another GOOGLE and learn?

Surprising what turns up in the 50yr secrecy law-when everything HAS to be published.!

Actually I have done many searches, recently as well as in the past when I wrote a paper for my physics grad class. I have seen none of what you are saying beyond the quote that Brian gave which is given as "proof" everywhere and the fact that Einstein and Oppenheimer were disgusted at the thought of a nuclear war. THAT is why I don't believe you.

So, unless you give some links that give any backing to what you say, then it all just becomes your opinion instead of the truth. And unless you give any proof then I guess this argument is done.

People like Einstein can be mimicked. Thats about all we can ever acomplish. You can't just take away what they did because we know more now. I do however find it hard to believe that scientists had no earthly clue what would happen when we launched the nuke. Of course they wouldn't know for sure, but they had to have some good clue as to what would happen. They weren't as smart but that doesn't make them barbarians.
