    Question Linux Media Player

I recently installed Mandrake Linux, and I still have XP running on my other hard drive. I've always used Windows Media Player to organize and play my gigabytes of music. Mandrake came with Xmms, but that just doesn't cut it for me. I want a media player that allows me arrange music according to album, artist, or user-defined playlist. Does anyone here know where I could get a program like that for Linux?

I have Xine and I downloaded MPlayer. I don't like either. They force me to deal with file names instead of song names. I'm looking for an open source media player that provides the organization and user interface that Windows Media Player provides.

if youre talking about mp3s, it's XMMS.
otherwise mplayer is all powerful, just takes a little getting used to..

Oh, and for sorting by album/artist, ever heard of directories? That's what the filesystem is for.

I have Xmms, but it doesn't have the features I'm looking for. I already searched freshmeat.net, and now I've searched sourceforge.net, too. I still haven't found anything as user-friendly as Windows Media Player. I guess I'll just have to boot up in Windows whenever I want to listen to my music.

Next you'll start complaining that Jabber doesn't have Custom Emoticons and the Gimp doesnt have a cool enough looking splash screen.

Free software is art, not gimmicks.

Im using Red Hat 9.0, and I found XMMS had everything to offer that I use on Winamp. I was able to add a directory, and even sort the list. I found it very similar to Winamp.

And who uses Windows Media Player to play music anyways?

I'm not talking about gimmicks or splashscreens, Brian. The Linux media players I've looked at simply don't have all of the functionality of Windows Media Player.

I used to use Windows Media Player and I think its the best. I use it on my desktop but on my laptop, it uses a bit too much CPU so I use WinAMP which does a good enough job and I really like this skin that docks on top of my screen always on top. I still prefer WMP because it just has so many cool music organizing features.

    Shh!

Your not allowed to say that! You most bow before all open source projects no matter what the qulity. No matter what, MS is bad what ever they make is better.

Sorry, but this 'joke' is often true. Some people do care though, in some places its worth a shot. The real people behind it normaly dont give crap, but theres so many fan boys out there...

You hit the nail on the head, mart_man00. I considered saying just that, but decided against it so that I didn't get flamed.

    You're nuts.

The ONLY codec I've ever had to install for WMP is the DivX codec, which is no big deal.

What other codecs are there for WMP??
