Linux Media Player

You may want to contact the maintainers of XMMS and let them know what functionality you are looking for and maybe they can tell you some odd way XMMS does it. If not, then suggest to them it would be good to have that functionality and maybe they can look at putting that into the next release. That's the best way to get what you need in the open source world......that or code it yourself if you have the time and ability.

winamp is almost completely identical to xmms.

XMMS even supports winamp skins.

and yes you need to download those and install them in WMP if you want to play certain video files... or just grab mplayer which pretty much plays anything...

How well it does matter to. You woldnt of said anything if i knocked MS, they should get some respect here too. Sometimes more the Open Source.

It might be motivated by greed, years late, not that great, but if this many people complained about some windows feature something would be done.

Its great to see programmers work on this, they should get some respect for what they did. That doesnt mean we cant question it and that they dont have a responsibilty to the users.

Because of Gentoo devs i had to write some crap up so that there program(Portage) would work like the dam man page. This ........es me off. They took up the job, they should fix it. I got back 'thats not the gentoo way', if you say it live up too it. You can ask for help and people should pitch in but some people dont hold to anything.

No, but something like it is implied with any real OS(that claims to be for desktops anyway).

a lot of people complain about viruses and security holes like rpc and well i have yet to see microsoft do anything about it!

like it or not unix/linux is not an operating system for those afraid to tinker... use windows if you cant be bothered really it is that easy...

Oh how I wish I had the ability to code my own media player.

The only codec I've ever had to download was DivX.

And I do expect a desktop OS to have a user-friendly media player. Macs have iTunes, Windows has WMP, but Linux is lacking. DamonBrinkley's suggestion to talk to the developers is the most intelligent thing said in this thread thus far. I may just do that.

Do you think that it is fair to call GNU/linux a desktop operating system considering that XFree86 is just an addon?

The biggest difference between those comparisons is the people at Microsoft, Apple, Real, etc have paid programmers whos sole job is to make a media player. Most open source apps (for the most part) are coded by hobbyist who work on it when they get a chance. It is kind of surprising that one of the Linux vendors hasn't put a little money into developing a media player. I'm not very picky so things like xmms, xine, and mplayer fit my needs just fine.
