No, it says that it's a long damn way to Europe and it's a lot cheaper for me to hop in a car and drive to Florida.

I would have thought with the low passenger numbers and high competition, air fares to/from the US would be low at the moment.

Without really searching, I got London -> New York, Washington or Boston for £179 with British Airways. That's not bad. Used to cost me £120 to fly London -> Copenhagen with BA or SAS, a 2 hour flight. Now, of course, I use the cut price no frills airlines - on a short flight like that, who cares that there is no food.

I'm sure if I was seriously looking for a flight, I could get a better deal too.

Yeah, if I was seriously looking. OTOH, I can spend $60 in gas and get to Florida.

Wow, well that sounds like a good holiday!

If you only spend $60 on gas...you cant be going far.

Last time I looked the US was closer to Europe than Australia.......(and most of the rest of the world)

The point being the value of the experience.

What about Canada, Mexico or South America?

That wouldn't get me 1/5 of the way to the next state.

Most Australians go overseas as soon as they leave school (before Uni).
    We pay thru the nose.
    Sydney -> Europe Au$1300 (US$800 £500)

That's enough to fill my car up 4 times... It'll get me about 1200 miles, which is far enough to get to Florida.

I'm not debating that at all. I'd love to go to Europe - I've wanted to for years. My point is that right now, financially and chronologically (if that's the right word for this), it makes a lot more sense for me to stick around the US or Canada. Plus, I get the added bonus of helping the local economies just a little.

Comparably, yeah. One time I'm definitely glad the people of this country complain so much about everything they can. It was really great when the economy and everything was going well. Gas was like 75 cents a gallon. Now it's about twice that, but it's still not that awful.

If I spent 60€ ( which at the moment is slightly more than 60$ ) I can fill up my tank 2 times if I'm lucky. With that I can go to Essen and back, approx. 500 Km in less than 4 hours ( inside the speed limit ). Welcome to Germany: free roads, limited gasoline...

Don't worry, you'll start to feel the benefits of liberating Iraqi oilfields soon enough.

Either that, or the corporations will keep the gain to themselves.

I look forward to visiting Europe after college or as soon as I can, if possible, but the problem with visiting Europe is that you wouldn't want to visit for just a few days; you'd want at least a couple of weeks. So for now I've only been to different destinations within the United States: Washington, D.C.; Baltimore, Maryland; Orlando and the gulf coast of Florida; Chicago; San Francisco and Los Angeles, California; and Memphis, Tennessee.

I wouldn't mind visiting Australia either, and someday maybe I'll get a chance to see Japan and China, too.

    Probably the latter.
