    Holidays

    Hi.

Whilst listening to friends and family etc, I realised that none of them goes on holiday in the UK anymore.

Cheap packages to Spain/Greece etc seem to be the way.

Do you know there are thousands of beautiful and interesting places in the UK that this young generation dont even know exist? Thats bad in my book.

See, I am not against soddding off to Ibiza or whatever, but I believe people should actually see things that exist almost on their doorstep. I cant believe it is all about 'the weather being poor'. For example Cornwall is very hot a lot of the year, has crystal clear blue sea, a glorious party/surf town (Newquay) and more years of history than the US has burgers Also people think it is cheaper to go abroad. I believe it used to be, but now the difference is slimmer-unless you have loads of kids maybe.

What I want to know is if you live in US, do you go to different countries? The vastness of the US means (I guess) that you can go somewhere sunny/somewhere cold and still be in your home country.

I know of some people who were amazed when they discovered 'the real' UK. So much so they now wish to see the rest. Does anybody else have a (sensible) view on this?
    Such is life.

Beach holiday in Cornwall (with its yearly 15 metres of rain) or beach holiday in southern Europe................. hmmmmmm.......... Europe it is.

The weather is really not the countries strong point.

I live on the south coast, just round the coast from Bournemouth and I would disagree. We have lovely weather here for much of the summer. None of this skin cancer-inducing, apply factor 48 sunblock every 5 mins Meditteranean heat. But at 30 degrees, still hot enough. Then the cooler, possibly wet spells provide a nice refreshing change and an excuse to do something other than cook yourself on the beach.

I live in the U.S., but I've never been out of the country, even to Canada. That will change shortly, though, as me and my wife just
bought a 28-foot motorhome which we will use to see the vast
North American continent asap. We've already taken it for a short jaunt up to the Catskill Mts. in N.Y. Beautiful summer weather there, but a little chilly at night and the bugs can be quite
annoying, whether you shower or not.
    No. Wait. Don't hang up!

    This is America calling!

I'll probably visit the UK one day (assuming I can afford this). The US is pretty vast and interesting, but it's always good to see how things are in other countries.

Hey Rick, you live pretty close to me. I've never seen a programmer online that even lived in new jersey.

I guess some people like to experience different culture, as well as vantage points. Born travellers.

The only continent I haven't travelled around is Antarctica.

Why travel 4000Km to the other side of Australia when I can get to Asia (2650Km) quicker and cheaper?

I hear the penguins are lovely this time of year (with BBQ sauce).

I've been to Tijuana (in Mexico). That's pretty much the limit of my out-of-country travels. I've stayed in California for 9 days, North Carolina for 3 days, Vermont for 3 days, and I've been to neighboring states on day trips. I've been to Denver and Chicago, but only on airplane stopovers.

Penguins are really fascinating to swim with. They look so clumsy on the land, but try snorkeling after one in the water - they sure can shift.

Try snorkelling with a daemon! They're much more reliable.

Ok, but I still believe all the package holidayers are missing out on lots of heritage, history and stunning places.

Go off to the sun for 2 weeks, and spend the other 2 in UK.

And as pointed out, the SWest is actually mild compared to rest of UK. Did you know Palm trees grow in Cornwall? Yup. So the sun is there.

Personal choice I guess, but I cant help getting bored stiff 2 days into a 'Med' holiday. Granted I am not as young......

Sitting on a beach..Bah...Even in Ibiza I liked more to go to the old city and discover. Just me I guess. If you dont see it now.....you may never get the chance again

And as I thought-Posters from US like to stay in US. Distances may be involved and obviously there is a lot to see.

I would like to see ALL of the US myself one day...Come on my lucky 6 numbers.....

    I also noticed that.
For the country that rules the world the average citizen has seen very little of it. Does that say something about US culture?

I wonder how the form thier opinions on the rest of the world if they have not experienced life elsewhere first hand.

    >>Distances may be involved and obviously there is a lot to see.

Compared to the distances involved from Australia?
To drive from the capital city of this state to the border would take you about 24hrs. It could take you 3 days depending on the direction. You would not pass thru a city with more than 150,000 people.

    >>Penguins are really fascinating to swim with. <<

We get the little 'fairy' penguins here (about a 30cm tall).
Used to watch them come up the beach on one of the islands as a kid.

We used to have a house on a river where a pod of dolphins would swim past each day hunting fish. The dolphins act as a team, most rounding the school into the shallows and then one will do a massive flip in the middle of the school, stunning many fish. Then they all zoom in and feed.
Used to go out in a Canadian canoe and pick up the stunned fish.

    Ever seen a dolphin angry....

I have been to the SW of England. The thing I remember more than anything else was the amount of traffic on the roads. It seemed to take forever to get from one place to the next. I would like to visit the Eden Project though.

Never seen a penguin whilst in Aus. The biggest I have swum with were gentoo penguins off the Valdez peninsula, Argentina. They are about 45 cm tall. They swam in and out from the shore, i.e. did really stay around, you saw them coming then you saw them going.

In the southern Galapagos, there are Galapagos penguins which are a bit smaller, but they seem content to cruise around the rocks, so you get to see a lot more of them.

Check the avatar to this guy and the text below his posts. I believe there is a relation between these and his never having been outside the US.

I once heard an interview with an old man who claimed that "the US is simply the best nation", even though that was the only nation that he had ever been to.

I think it's good if people can go and visit other nations, and see other ways of living, it will lessen ignorance and increase tolerance, I think. Of course, there's a difference between these 'one week to Greece'-charters and a train trip in Vietnam.

Personally, I have decided for myself to go and visit every single nation that there is today, as I have always been extremely interested in geography. It's gonna take a while for me I guess, but I will do it, starting about three years from now.
