"The best way to get answers is to just keep working the problem, recognizing when you are stalled, and directing the search pattern.....Don’t just wait for The Right Thing to strike you – try everything you think might even be in the right direction, so you can collect clues about the nature of the problem."

> You try to answer it and you finally have found the answer. That's all!
If you had to find the answer and could not give the answer immediately, then you have learned something new or found something you forgot. So answering questions is a good way to learn new things and remember things.
Personally I like it to help other people willing to learn programming a step further in their learning process, the process which everyone goes through. And maybe some day I might need their help, I also hope that at boards like these people learn the value of 'knowing' people to answer questions. Also in my opinion knowledge should be spread and not just kept in the minds of just a few people.
I answer questions because it give me great satisfaction to know I've helped another coder through a problem - hopefully. We've all started coding something and ran into what seemed like a huge brick wall. No matter what we tried we still ran into the same wall. Often times one person will get stuck in a 'rut' We all have our coding styles and our own thought patterns and logical processes. Sometimes those work against us. Often I've found that looking at how others approach a problem helps me to see outside of my own 'brain box'. Many times I've read a post and just said to myself 'Wow, I would have never thought of it like that.' It really expands your horizon to see how others think and code - it has helped me immeasurably in all aspects of my programming.
There are some threads that I don't respond to but still learn from. And there are some that I'm like 'Ok, that's an easy one'. Then when I really start to think about it, I realize that perhaps there is more to the problem that I did not notice or paid little attention to.
In short (which I rarely am ), I love the information sharing that goes on in the board and the people are some of what I would consider my 'best friends' even though I've never met them. Now that's powerful - getting to know and appreciate someone simply through what they type on a board. Very cool.
No, it's not like any of us have jobs or family. The majority of us live in our parents homes, and since none of us have any friends we resort to this CBoard because it puts purpose to our meaningless lives. We also don't like to go outside, because people can hurt us when we go outside. Watching TV, or going to the theatres is risky because the government tries to fill our minds with propaganda through secret messages, so that's certainly out of the question, too.Originally posted by money?
I am just wondering why do you guys give help to people you don't even know. I mean... what do you gain? Nothing. It's just a waste of time....( Aren't there more interesting things in your life to do...)
Isn't there anything more interesting in your life other than asking hypocritical, inane questions? I've seen you post answers to other peoples questions as well; thus, I do not believe that anyone here should answer to your question. What we do with our time is our business, and you should refrain from proclaiming that helping others is a waste of time. However, since you seem to think that we gain nothing by helping others, I'll start to help myself out by making certain I never help you.

Certainly not; you take one old lady across the street and the next thing there are hundreds of them saying,"Me too! Me too!" - it can take hours to get away from a busy junction.

Xei,
> We also don't like to go outside .... through secret messages
People can also hurt me but i go outside, i watch TV and i go to theatre although i know it might be a little risky ( after all,l here's where you 're gonna show that you are strong in mind )
>Isn't there anything more interesting in your life other than asking hypocritical, inane questions?
I don't see where's the hypocritical thing, but to make this quesion more generall and to answer to you; yes, because there are much more interesting things to my life, i 'm never gonna post a reply to help someone i willl never know. I 'll use this board as many other people do. Just to ask my question, although i don't think that i'll have any from now on, because i am finished with my book on C and some other tutorials, but you never know.
>and you should refrain from proclaiming that helping others is a waste of time
I just say again that i am only speaking for the people behind some monitors, not the real world out there.
>I've seen you post answers to other peoples questions as well
Well, yeah. I used to. But after reconsidering my initiall thoughts, i 've found that i can do some thousants of better things than this.
Also, if your life is really so meaningless, try find some other ways to give it meaning, not just this board ( expect if you think that all the meaning that someone's life can have is this board ).
And because instead of writtig this answer i could read a book and learn something new, i 'll never post again to this thread or maybe to this Generall Discussion forum ( to say the truth i never used to ).
( Note that: The initiall topic was/is about giving help only )

Well, people help for the same reason they replied to your thread; they like the challenge of trying to explain a concept to someone who just doesn't get it.
>>I 'll use this board as many other people do. Just to ask my question<<
Those tend to be the new people that can't answer any questions. When they stick around, they inevitably start answering them too.
>>although i don't think that i'll have any from now on, because i am finished with my book on C and some other tutorials, but you never know.<<
HAHAHAHA! money? said something funny! Wait... he was serious? EVEN FUNNIER! money?, very few people on this board are at the point where they don't need to ask a question from time to time (Salem comes to mind) and you aren't anywhere near that point. Unless, of course, you plan to stop programming now.
>>Well, yeah. I used to. But after reconsidering my initiall thoughts, i 've found that i can do some thousants of better things than this.<<
Ignoring the spelling and grammatical errors... I doubt that you can do something much better than helping other people who are in need. Pay it forward, the Golden Rule, etc. What are you going to do if everyone who read this thread (basically, the regulars) ignore your posts the next time you ask a question? (and you WILL ask another question)
>>Also, if your life is really so meaningless, try find some other ways to give it meaning, not just this board ( expect if you think that all the meaning that someone's life can have is this board ). <<
For example, reading fine literature, doing things for a lady in a wheelchair, having deep conversations with friends, playing with my dog... oh wait, I already do that stuff. Just because I post on this board doesn't mean I don't find some time for the subjective aspects of life.
>>And because instead of writtig this answer i could read a book and learn something new, i 'll never post again to this thread or maybe to this Generall Discussion forum ( to say the truth i never used to ).<<
The first intelligent thing you said in that reply. GD is a waste of time, but it can be fun
I give help because I've gotten help in the past, and still continue to get it on occasion (when I need it). I'm returning the favor, sharing my knowledge, and making the world a little bit better place (or at least making a few people a little smarter). Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
Away.
Webmaster/BlackRat: Very well said. Exactly what I think. Everyone needs to view helping people not as losing time and money but as making the world a better place...or something like that.

I like to help others. I feel better, when I help others.
And I'm sure, that the others will help me, when I need help.
It would be a great deal, when everyone would help each other, we could have a better world.
When I help, I get a better overview of the ideas / work of others and see how they do something, you often get better ideas for your own work, when you help others to solve their problems....
Knowledge is power and when you help others you share your knowledge and when you get help someone else shares his/her knowledge with you.
It's always better to know, that you get help, cause u have helped!
