Sounds like you have a problem there mate. Mine doesnt hang ever. Freezes? Just trying to open IE?

I can't comment for MineSweeper, but my XP and 95 systems are here on the desk in front of me working. If I leave them both alone for a week, the 95 one will be working when I come back, the XP has invariably crashed and rebooted in the same period.

Things like Seti@Home run reliably on the 95, (and my NT4 boxes), but hangs on the XP.

I get BSOD's on the XP, I don't remember the last time I had a BSOD on any of the NT4's.

IE6 periodically freezes up requiring a Ctrl-Alt-Del to kill, doesn't happen with 5.5 under '95.

Surfing on the XP can be really painful with periodic unexplained go slows and path lost events. As an experiment a while back, (posted on the tech board), I had streaming audio from the same site running to both the 95 and the XP at the same time. The 95 ran for an hour, the XP lost path 22 times.

I struggled with XP (pro) stability for a long time, eventually though i realised it wasn't XP, my ram was faulty and slowly died on me. Those that are suffering from freezes should look at their hardware, or perhaps between their chair and keyboard. I didn't even know it was possible for XP to 'freeze' If a program crashes it handles it well and just closes that program. If you get a BSOD it resets itself although you can turn that option off if you want to see the error. XP is, if nothing else, EASILY the most stable MS OS.

All this crap about the theme $$$$s me too, i mean, you have to look at it at most for 5 seconds when you format until you change it back to classic, it won't kill you. Anyway i like both silver and blue and i alternate between the two.

So I suppose the fact that my NT4 boxes and even my 95 box are stable with the same chair/keyboard interface is simply what? In addition, the system happily and reliably crashes if I am out of the country and the system has just been left to itself.

First time installed on brand new machine. Have re-installed it once anyway to try to fix it. Hardware checks out fine time and time again.

I am still convinced the problem is with the networking - almost all of the symptoms of my troubles with this system show "an element" of network involvement. There is much new code in XP on the networking front, (inbuilt PPPoE for example). I think there is an instability in there.

I use StyleXP and have MetallicBlinds as my current theme. It looks so much better, and there are so many themes for people who do not like the windows conventional theme. If XP is crashing it's something that you installed or a hardware conflict (perhaps a driver).

Adrian: Check to see if you've got a memory leak, if it crashes over a certain amount of time it's likely that is the problem. (maybe software for win95 that you may be running on xp?)
