    Guitar is ticking me off

My stupid guitar strings keep busting. Yesterday I decided to tune it, because it was out of tune as f***. Everything just happened to be too low, so I started tightening the strings, starting with string 6. I got it tuned perfectly. Then I moved on to 5. It was awesome as well. Then I got to 4. BOOM! There goes the string. So I got a new string out, and restringed it and it worked out. So I got to the next string. $$$$$ popped as well. So I stringed another string onto it, started to tune it, and POP! there goes another string 3. I got no more string 3's! So what does my ingenuis mind decide to do? Tie a square knot! BOOM!

You're probably tuning it up too much. (or unlucky, or buying crappy strings). Use this as a tuning reference, http://www.dreadscott.com/Guitar.html it's pretty accurate.

Since i also play guitar id suggest you just buy a tuning thingie (digital or not that doesnt really matter), just be sure you dont tune it one tone too high coz then those tuners also say its correctly tuned....

Btw, what kind of guitar you have?

PS : you know those strings called Boomers, maybe they're something for you.
Then I got to 4. BOOM
    Tie a square knot! BOOM!

I got a tuning pipe, and I try to tune it to that. But whenever I try to get the same tone as the tuning pipe they bust. I think I do need a tuner. I think I just got a shiznitty tuning pipe.

When is the last time you changed strings? Sounds like they are just old. Plus, it's a good idea to change the entire set if you break a string (not to mention more than twice a year).
If you have cash buy a good tuner, don't waste your money on a cheap electronic tuner. If you don't have the cash for a nice tuner, buy a pitch fork (A-440). You can generally find one for less than $10. Then learn to tune by harmonics, not just pitch.

Or you could use the dial tone (at least in america). It's pitched to 'A'.

I broke a few strings when I played cello. If you're inexperienced with tuning, you might be tuning an octave high, or you might just not really know how to hear the correct pitches. The Cello strings made by "dominant" were the best, although I don't know if they make guitar strings. However, I do know that tuning a guitar by harmonics is easy, and you should definitely be doing it like that, as was suggested earlier.
    Away.

    >klinerr That might just be it. I twist it kinda fast.

    >tgm Dude, I said I used a new string and it busted too. Oh, and how does a pitch fork work? I've only used strobe tuners.

    >blackrat I might try using harmonics next time, I've heard a lot of people do it that way.

Anywayz, I'm ordering some new strings soon. They'll probably be able to withstand more than the ones that came with mine (cheap freebies). Any brands you guys might suggest?

don't listen to me... i play a bass and you usually never break a bass string anyway because they're alot thicker and relaxed than a guitar string...

What kind of bass do you use? A 4-string? I'd like to learn bass sometime (of course, I also have a list of 20 instruments I'd like to learn as well, on top of the 5 I can already play. And one of the five includes all standard percussion instruments. I'm section leader at school )

if you want strings that will last longer than your guitar will (sarcasm intended) check out Elixer's. they are REALLY expensive but keep a great sound for a long time.

if your new to guitar they might not be worth the coin though (especially if your breakin alot of 'em)

btw: make sure your not tuning an octive to high as suggested above.
