I've been slacking off in high school, am I going to hell

I've spent a lot of my junior year doing nothing. The first quarter I did exceptionally well, but my 'school is immaterial' attitude has got the best of me, and I haven't been doing so hot. I don't expect to get into a great school, probably Wentworth or the University of Maine. If I do get into college, then does it even matter how much I did or didn't apply myself in high school? Granted I get my head out of my butt and start working in college. I'm in two honors courses and the only one I'm in danger of failing is chemistry, the rest of my classes I'm passing with an 80 or higher (my highest grade is like an 89 in math). I dont' think school is difficult, and I don't blame society or teachers or anything stupid like that, I just don't care about what high school has to offer. even though school isn't too difficult it takes an extremely high amount of energy to actually obtain good grades (memorization sucks).

yeah, any comments, criticicms, similar experiences etc are welcome

Geeze, man, it takes effort, but every ounce of effort is worth it. Chemistry is a great class; it's all math, you should be able to handle it. Anyway, try taking classes that interest you more.
    Away.

I've slacked off a bit lately too, and I'm in grade 12! Don't worry about it. If you do poorly you can retake a course, thats the worse it can get

i had that problem in sophmore year, my grades are fairly good now but when a parent passes away, you can't expect a 4.0 for that year....i happen to enjoy chemistry too, it's the foreign language courses i hate and i am forced to take them.

I know exactly how you feel...
Now that I actually have a desire to attend a certain university (Waterloo) i'm quite ........ed of at myself for not working for the past year. I'm afraid i'm not going to get to go where I want to go because of my slacking off in the past year and a half. I've picked it up recently, and plan on doing the same next year in grade 12... but i'm afraid that it won't be enough.

Both of you, it's too late to worry. Instead, just work hard for the rest of high school. Then, when you apply, write about how you started to work hard just because you wanted to get into whatever university. Your admissions essay is the time to explain any apparant faults in your application.

    knowledge == power.

The more you know, the more you have the ability to learn, and the more you enjoy learning. Having a very diverse education will make you a complex thinker (in a world where people are mostly simple minded).

I personally love learning, and I try to get as broad of an education as I possibly can. I also feel that my broad range of knowledge makes me an excellent problem solver, and a much better thinker. I'm usually told by all sorts of people (ranging in age, education, and job titles) that they're amazed at how much knowledge I have, especially for someone of my education (only a year of college) and age (21)

I'm always reading books, listening to books on audio cassette, and trying to apply my knowledge out in the real world.

I wasn't exactly a scholar in high school myself (3.1 gpa at the end of my junior year, and went down my senior year). But I really appreciate learning now. I usually find myself reading as many books, and trying to learn as much as I possibly can in my free time.

You may not enjoy school right now, but if you're constantly filling your head with a broad range of information, you'll find down the road how powerful knowledge really is, and you'll appreciate learning/reading books/going to school.

Here's a good article by Bill Gate's where he describes how getting a diverse education helped him get to where he is now:

I just graduated high school yesterday. I'm going to college in the fall. I did fairly well, all except sophomore year. I had a 3.3 second semester that year. Then junior and senior years were good, all semesters 4.0 or above.

Anyways, the way I see high school is that it is there to get you into college. Once you're in college, it'll be a whole new ball game. Apply yourself there, make yourself competitive. Your future employers will look at your college credentials, vs. your high school credentials.

But try your best, do the work, get into college. And when in college, remember that these years will be looked upon heavily for your first job. After that, mostly experiences.

I've taken many courses that I hate, either in school or in college, and I know it doesn't feel good... But I'm sure anyone can handle any course( ofcourse if it's not too difficult or advanced for him ), and I don't think that the chemistry you are talking in school is very difficult to you...

Yes, chemistry requires memorization, but if you work on it hard enough you will be able to memorize it... although when I took chemistry, they tried to avoid question that depend 100% on memorization...

As long as you are studying( either in school or in college ), you will have courses that you won't like very much, for example I study computer sciece, and it's the major that I wanted all of my life, and still I have some courses that are university requirments that I don't like, but I'm doing well, I'm not getting A's in them like other major courses, but the lowest grade I got in one of them was C , and that wasn't very bad, and if worked a little bit harder I would've had a much better grade...

You should not feel bad about it, try to enjoy it, and believe me chemistry isn't that bad...

    And Good Luck.
    none...

School is pretty easy overall - I found that just doing the homework will get you by with a B and if u put just a small effort into it an A is easy - homework's the key - it doesn't matter whether it's jr. high, highschool, or college.

College is more about the experience - if u gonna go to a college then goto one where u can live on campus or near... the party scene is incredible.

And guess what, all those ppl I know who went to UCLA and USC or even back east to college... I'm seeing them again, back here where they grew up. Pretty much all of them are moving back in with their parents and driving the same car they did back when they were 16, I know it's sad. There's much more to life then the college u goto and I'm afraid that these ppl who lived it up at Berkley and USC and the like are finding that out.
