What kind of language is COMBOL, and where is mostly used?

I took a COBOL class in college but did my best to forget everything I ever knew about it.

It is probably safe to say it is unpopular with everyone apart from COBOL programmers.
I grew up with languages of this era. Fortran, Algol etc. were succinct, precise and elegent in their way, COBOL was always wordy and not really "like" a "proper" programming language. That said, Grace Hopper, (the woman that lead the development of it), saw many of the problems that later plagued languages and "platform specific" issues. Example, COBOL programs have source machine and target machine specifiers created to enable source to be compiled on one machine but run on another - advanced stuff back then.
There are object oriented versions of COBOL available but I have never used them.
